I believe you can change your address (TM30), then get a residency certificate from the Immigration Office, where you filed your most recent TM30.
That is how I got my driver's license in Pattaya. My visa was from Khon Kaen, I went to Pattaya immigration, did my TM30 (requires address change), then got my certificate of residence.
I did the volunteer visa then 3 or 4 covid extensions, left then came back on a tourist visa, I didn't have any problems. However, some people suggest that Phuket airport is more forgiven then BKK airports.
I think you will be ok if you have your onward travel already planned and travel with plenty of cash.
Be very respectful to the immigration officers. I think some people get attitude towards IOs and end-up in trouble.
I do recommend travelling with 20,000 THB and rental agreement. If you can find a friend that speaks Thai (meaning a Thai national), that you can call in case of emergency.
I doubt you'll need anything but better to have and not need.
