I *think* this is good advice for American men planning to get married to a Thai national.

When at the US embassy getting your freedom to marry affidavit, bring your wife's passport with you and get a certified copy.

It's useful/necessary for filing tax US tax forms.

I said *think* because I have not yet filed US tax.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When planning to marry a Thai national, American men should take the wife's passport when obtaining a freedom to marry affidavit at the US embassy. It's important for US tax filing, although some commenters express frustrations regarding US tax laws and dependent claims.

I don’t think you can get a passport for a foreign national.

absolutely agree. I can’t have my mail go to my family in California when I move to Thailand (soon), because suddenly I’d be responsible for CA taxes (I’ve lived in FL & WA for 5 years). Absolute insanity!

yeah. That's what I'm doing in FL. However, I'm sure you'd agree that family receiving the mail would be better, especially when dealing with finances. Before you say go electronic, I've tried and most of my institutions have complied properly. One seems to insist on still sending me mail. Before you tell me to move my money, I can't for one of the investments...I will NEVER use an advisor again. These problems I'm facing are one of the reasons I'm not in Thailand yet. The absurd financial rules in the U.S. have made things quite complicated...and then...there are taxes 🙂.

Living in FL, someone tells me to leave the country on a regular basis, usually in response to my having the gall to be offended by a stranger slapping my butt or something similar. I laugh and respond, "I'm trying." They have no clue as to what's involved.

Well. I don't really have to to worry about people slapping my butt, but I agree on your other points. I am having IRS issues which is a pain with foreign address.

Good luck to you

You cannot claim your spouse who lives overseas as a dependent,

Filing as married and claiming someone as a dependant are 2 different things. Generally beneficial to file as married as it doubles the income threshold for each tax bracket.
