Why do some Bangkok Bank branches refuse to provide account statements while others do?

I opened a Bangkok Bank account a few months ago, in Pattaya, Soi Bakhao.

Afterwards I met my visa Agent in BKK and was able to get a bank statement in BKK.

Today, I want to Bangkok Bank and requested a statement, but the teller refused me, telling me I had to go to the branch I original opened the account.

What is with that? Why some branches can provide statements whiles will not?

What happens if I want to move to another region, say Phuket, how will I get a bank statement from my Branch in Pattaya?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user encountered confusion regarding Bangkok Bank's policy on obtaining account statements, as they were denied a statement request at a branch other than where the account was opened. The community comments suggest that banking practices vary significantly across branches in Thailand, with some allowing requests for statements at any location while others do not. Recommendations include utilizing banking apps for statements or addressing issues with branch management. Concerns about policies and the different treatment of customers at various branches were expressed, highlighting the need for expats to adapt to local banking systems.

Common problem but easy to transfer the bank account to a new branch. It's the same if you need a new ATM card, you have to go to the issuing bank.

@Colin *******
Not with all banks. I have Kasikorn and tried to transfer my branch and was told it cannot be done. I can get a new book, new ATM and statement up country but my branch cannot be changed so they get 15B every ATM withdrawal.

I have a Bkk Kasikorn AC and don't get charged a withdrawal fee when up country

Upto her i guess... ideally shudnt happen.. if u have a bank book use that and get its copy stamped by the bank... 100 baht charge ofcourse.. but if u just need for yourself its easy to fetch that from the app

i was on a retiree visa living in BKK close to Icon Siam. No bank let me open an account for me with either a flat refusal or 101 formalities. Even KTB near me refused. One day i was at Pharam 9 mall n KTB only asked for my passport, 2 pics n pay 99 bath annually towards a medical insurance which covers a lot of stuff. Unfortunately i keep good health so not yet used the insurance. So rules do change from branch to branch of the same bank

Always ask for a manager, when an underling gives you a hard time. Always.

Get it from the app...?!
Bruce *****
But even if you download and then print immigration want each page stamped
Kevin **********
Maybe you can ask the visa agent how to access your bank app on your smart phone

Banks worldwide are moving customers (or trying to) away from coming to the branch. If it is something that can be done online, they will push you to that. The manpower time to do mundane work is a cost that banks worldwide are trying to reduce.
Stéfan ********
Yep... terribly archaic. You can use the app or have a pdf sent to you via email.

If you have Bangkok bank app you can download from the app, upto one year. If you want me to help you , send me a message

do they accept these at the immigration to extend your visa?

I'm with Bangkok Bank. You can't access the official statement on the letterhead from the app unfortunately. I have to use internet banking, but it's easy enough

most Thai banks use really outdated systems making some activities extra hassle for the staff to process - often, you have to be really friendly and/or lucky to get them to do anything - branches that deal with many expats/tourists are usually the most flexible

What has a visa agent got to do with getting a bank statement?
Dianne *****
@Steve *******
I imagine that the one posting is usimg an agent to assist them getting a retirement or marriage visa. The bank statement is a part of this. Has to be in a particular format, ordered from your bank about a week before you go to immigration. Has to include every transaction you have made in the previous 12 months. Have never heard of anyone being able to use bank statements they have downloaded from internet banking as proof of funds for long term visas and 12 month extensions, however I guess it is possible that some immigration offices are less finniky than others
Steve ********
@Dianne ****
Correct. I get my statements once a year from my local branch (which is not my "own" branch) with no problem. Agents will of course pay money to a bank official for this "service" and then charge the client further. I've never seen any sense in using an agent, as all transactions can be carried out yourself, occasionally you may need some translation, but you don't need to pay an agent for this. I guess I just get amused by people who seem to need an agent to do everything for them. I often wonder if they need an agent to do their grocery shopping for them!
Dianne *****
@Steve *******
actually that's probably what I have been doing wrong ie not using an agent to pay the bank teller to facilitate getting my yearly statement. The last two years my statement has taken between 11 and 18 days to arrive from Bangkok Bank. Both years I have had a frustrating series of repeat visits to the bank where it appears that they had lost my statement or hadn't sent a request for my statement to the head office in Bangkok
Steve ********
@Dianne ****
The branch I use (which is not my actual branch) takes five days.
Steve ********
@Mark ******
You mean some people need help to walk into a bank, produce a lease and a passport and say "I wish to open a bank account"? Really? The helplessness of some people never ceases to amaze me! 🤣
Mark *******
@Steve *******
no it’s not that, I have some friends that have bank accounts in Thailand which they have opened as a tourist, some banks won’t let you do this but if you go to a agent they will do the.necessary paperwork needed
Gordon *******
Spot on Mark, not as easy as people think.
Mark *******
@Steve *******
some visa agents can assist with the process of opening a bank account.
Gray ******
Ask for another account at the branch that would not provide the statement.
Steve ********
@Gray *****
Then you have to go through all the hassle of getting a new certificate of residency, copy of lease etc, and the drama of closing your existing account and transferring the money.
Gray ******
@Steve *******
Keep the first account, you have already provided the necessary documentation to the company. They created me a second account after just a little resistance, then did the bank letters a few weeks later.

I don’t understand why banks in Thailand are so hard to deal with.

Dealing with banks should be easier than 7-11.

Ask politely but insist to speak to the manager & the teller usually will oblige you rather than lose face in front of their boss.

I live udon. BB send to b/kok for mine .kasikorn same day

Not only does it depend on the Bank but also the branch, after all, TiT. I'm with Kasikorn (Pattaya Tai branch) but got a statement when I needed one and a new card on expiry of my original card both up country. It's a lottery.
Yuv *****
just download it from internet banking
Khyle ****
banks in thailand are assholes like that. pretty common for them to tell you to go back to the branch you opened depending on what you have with you. i had to go all the way to ratchayothin to sort mine cus i lost my bank book. even tho i had my passport. but if you've lost it or not planned ahead, that's kinda on you they will say.
Joseph *********
TIT, cashier was too lazy, blew you off, any branch can do this.
Malcolm *************
Not sure why its a problem I opened a bank account years ago with Kasikorn bank in Bangkok and I can just order statements anytime anywhere online 👍🏻
Werner *******
I opened my account in BKK, but I got a bank statement last month here in Samui...so it's possible.
Stuart *********
Some branches are like that. It’s gotten better over the years where you can say order a new bank card from a branch that isn’t yours, but some branches are stuck in the dark ages and things can only be done in your own branch. If you move you’ll probably find it easier to change to a local branch near you.
