Sorry this maybe a little off topic. I am a U.S. Citizen who will be travelling to Hong Kong to get new Thai Visa. I am considering taking a trip to China. Anybody have experience as a U.S. passport visiting China?

So I am considering getting a Chinese Tourist Visa here in Thailand. Any thoughts?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A U.S. citizen planning to travel to China while in Thailand must obtain a Chinese Tourist Visa. It is noted that applying for a multiple-entry visa in Hong Kong is challenging without a residency ID. Many commenters suggest visiting a visa service center in Thailand, where documentation is reviewed on the spot, increasing the chances of successfully obtaining a visa. Some individuals have successfully acquired a 10-year multiple-entry visa with minimal hassle. Providing residency proof, even as a digital nomad, can be crucial for the application process.

Where in China do you want to go? Beijing and Shanghai have a 72 hr visa free stayover for Americans.

I don't think you can get multi entry Chinese visa in HK without having a HK ID card. So single entry will have to do without any residency in HK

Though thai visa is no problems in HK (Single entry).

Americans need a visa for China- no exempt entry.

The Chinese Visa is very easy to get at the service center

mentioned. I was given a 10 year multiple entry (even though I asked for a single). I downloaded then dropped off the completed forms on a Thursday and picked it all up the next day.

I'll note that they review your application on the spot and because of my occupation (photojournalism) I was asked to write and sign a declaration that I would not be taking and photos or videos for "work or publication". They provided a template with the wording, I did this sitting there with the agent. Weird but no problem.

China is an interesting place, it was a fun and educational trip. Enjoy!

Ah...yeah that might be a problem. Their requirements say you have to apply in your home country or country of residence. I was able to show residence in Thailand.

The service center is easy to get to and has an info desk with English speaking staff. I'd recommend going over and asking them.

I have U.S. Passport but have reside in BKK, doing the frequent trips out of Thailand. Given that I am a digital nomad with clients only in US and no legal residency -- do you think that will be a problem at the visa center?

There is a special place to apply for visas to china. A good friend just got a 10 year tourist visa for china with very little problem there.

You need the documentation they want and you'll get the visa
