TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent discussions indicate that the Thai government is unlikely to change the entry stamp duration from 60 days to 30 days due to low tourism. Many community members expressed skepticism about the rumors, suggesting that visa rules in Thailand are subject to frequent changes and misinformation. Conversations included various visa options for long-term stays and frustrations with the existing visa processes, highlighting the complexities many expats face.

My two cents : It’s funny how they are so dependent on tourism but hell bent on limiting the farang bringing money to their economy. Over the last years they entered the tech/financial sector and now they thought they could be “independent “ and regulate tourism. Problem is the generation who now are in their 40 wanting to settle down wishes to own rather than my parents who were happy to rent. The younger generation are also in to building financial independence and are now showing interest in countries where they can invest. Thailand has always been about spending for expats never any type of replenish. The governments new initiative to investigate some

house owners owning property through LLC which has been done for years are now creating a turmoil and I think if the Thai government don’t slow down we will see a lot of money leaving their day to day economy.

Even if they did that's fine because they know when they come to the US they can get away with everything but paying should not be a factor of you staying here I think the Visa is being steered towards the elite and those who are retired needs to change they have to make their visa laws more relaxed for torist. If border runs are such a problem for them then why is it not a problem for everybody else? I understand them wanting to have their sovereignty as an American but it's never understandable the other way around. I love Thailand but they need to fix things because they allow people on tourist visas to rent one year contracts in the country to rent property I think they need to stop doing that because if you're not going to be able to stay your entire contract they shouldn't be allowed to rent anything out to you other than a hotel unless you can qualify for a Visa that will allow you to stay long enough to live through at least a year contract that would bring tourism up it benefit their economy much more

Not Bangkok, but I have extended elsewhere.

Not all are extending their 30 or 60 days entry. Many are extending other visas, or 90 day reports.

Out of the millions of tourists arriving annually, only a mere fraction extend..

Actual tourist numbers are up, it's just the money they are spending this time of year is down in certain areas. One in particular is the fact all tourists are drinking less alcohol, and seen in the fact they now allow alcohol sales in tourist areas during religious holidays. Beer sales alone are down almost 40%.

Thailand does what Thailand wants to do. It’s got nothing to do with logic, common sense or business acumen. They are a law unto themselves and I’ve no doubt that it will ever be so.

Ultimately, it’s part of the charm of the country.

I never count on anything immigration-wise with Thailand until it actually happens. But the back-and-forth, not entirely gossips’ doing, is what still leads me to consider other SÉ Asian nations for retirement.

The challenge with long term tourist visas (which does lower the admin hassle for tourists) is that it would result in substantial revenue loss for visa. Never say never, but seems highly unlikely. For 10 year, they already have LTR, O-X and Thai Privilege. But the common thread there is that they are not offered to backpackers etc. Aimed at HNW visitors.

there are no guidelines with an agent. That’s why people use them. They do all the work for you and allows you free time to enjoy your time here. I can understand Derek’s frustration with the silly nuances of a marriage visa.

With that said, LTR and DTV visas sure make life a LOT easier for anyone who qualifies. Best visas Thailand has ever offered.

Rumors on rumors on rumors. They were never going to change anything until it's changed. Any headline you read means nothing. The TAT and the Thai newspapers throw out dozens of "proposals" every year that never materialize beyond clickbait. You can ignore anything you "hear" until it's published in the Royal Gazette.

very true, typical Thailand politics. I have read that tourism to Thailand is down over the past 2 years, thus causing concern, so, I’m certainly hoping the 60 day tourist visa free entry remains, but as you correctly say, nothing is certain until government confirmation by secured publication.
