What are the challenges and recommendations for opening a bank account in Thailand on a Non-O visa?

Hi all, just thought I'd put something up here about my experience opening a bank account today. I am currently in Thailand on a Non O based around my son, this is my first Non O and I needed the bank account to apply for my visa extension. TLDR Bangkok bank wont give you a bank account on an initial Non O since the rule changes so use KBank for new accounts!

The first branch I visited was the Exchange Tower Bangkok bank. The lady I spoke to wasnt very polite and it was clear she didn't want anything to do with me. She asked for a copy of my passport, my driving license, my sons birth certificate, my girlfriends ID and a copy of my sons passport. When I showed her printed copies of all of this she told me I needed a letter from a UK embassy that confirmed my passport was truly my passport. At this point I thanked her for her time and left.

The second branch I visited was the Bangkok bank opposite Sukhumvit Soi 11. This was a very different experience, the lady was very polite and started to process my application until she noticed the stamp in my passport was only for 3 months. At this point she explained that with the recent changes to Thai banking, Bangkok bank will no longer give bank accounts to anyone who hasn't already extended their visa. Basically anything less than 4 months and the banks policy is to refuse you.

The third and final branch I went to was the Kasikorn Bank in the Two Pacific Place building in Sukhumvit, just a short walk from the Nana BTS station. The lady was very helpful, only required to see an electronic version of my visa, an original passport, sons birth certificate and my girlfriends national ID card. I was only in the branch for about 30 minutes and I left with a new account, a functioning app on my phone and she even gave me a little tour of the KPlus banking app before I left.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shared their experience of opening a bank account in Thailand while on a Non-O visa, detailing the challenges encountered at different banks. They reported that Bangkok Bank had a strict policy of not allowing accounts for those with visas under four months, leading to difficulties and poor service. In contrast, Kasikorn Bank provided a helpful experience, requiring fewer documents and facilitating a quick account setup. Comments from other users echoed similar sentiments, praising Kasikorn Bank's service while criticizing Bangkok Bank. Collective feedback suggests that expats should consider Kasikorn or other banks for smoother account opening processes.

it's was actually very easy with Kasikorn, you wouldn't even need an agent. I didnt take one with me, my girlfriend came with me in case translations were needed.

I took my decision to use Kasikorn bank at the time as they had more ATMs. All my experiences have been great and I even opened another bank account ( as I wanted to build money for future use) with them and linked it to my app.

Bangkok bank flipped to harsh as the government told them to clean up their act as in the past they were easy and they hooked Falange to take out insurance ( which was an official bribe)

this was what I was saying to my girlfriend, the way they seem to have responded to the banking changes by going well over seems to suggest some form of guilt. Hopefully this bunch of comments can help people and save them time in the future.

I had the same experience at Exchange tower Bangkok Bank branch. Rude, abrasive & dismissive. I then went to Kasikorn Bank - On Nut branch and they could not have been more helpful and respectful. Opened 2 accounts without any hassles and nonsense.

it's amazing how consistently Kasikorn seem to be the most polite and helpful. Hopefully we can spread the word and save people time and effort in the future!

You didn't mention a residency certificate. Normally this is required.

they never asked for it.

providing all that is expected sometimes implies that you are prepared and have everything that's required. A long term lease agreement with the residency certificate is further ammo in your arsenal. Assume you also dressed appropriately. Respect is a big thing here and banks consider themselves professionals.

I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt but they were definitely on the smarter side. No vests and sports shorts!

Hi. I thought I'd piggyback on this, since I had a similar experience today in Chiang Mai. I came into Thailand earlier this week on a 3 month initial non-o retirement visa. First I went to Bangkok Bank. They did not straight up tell me I couldn't open an account, but they did say it would be up to the "head office" and that they would let me know in a week or two. They went ahead and did all the paperwork (which I signed), and required many documents: passport w/non-o stamp, printed copy of evisa with qr code, tm30, rental agreement, proof of thai phone number in my name, a signed W-9 (US tax form), AND an international driver's license (which, luckily, I had acquired on a whim from AAA before I left the U.S.). There was no mention of a new 4-month rule. They just seemed unsure of whether my opening an account would be allowed or not, despite the fact that I had every single document they asked me for. So I left there and went directly to Kasikorn Bank. They required the same docs and signatures (including the international drivers license - is that a new requirement?), and it took about an hour and a half to get the process completed. I walked out with a debit card, a bank book, and a functioning bank app on my phone. I'd recommend saving yourself some time by just going straight to KBank. Hope thiis helps!

Good to know! Thanks!

Very much depends on the bank and the person you dealt with

There's an address you can write to about rude, inefficient staff. I used it as I was ignored for 30 minutes after making an appointment with the manager. I got an impeccable reply - they even wanted a description of the offending staff.

i wouldn't have even been bothered if when I walked in she had said that she just didnt want to help me, but to try and send me on the hunt for a clearly made up form irritated me. I mean what if someone went looking for this form only to find out they couldn't have an account anyway.

I'm on holiday so don't have access to my computer where I stored the reply. If I remember I will search it out for you- easy to remember your name.

Now after you get your one year extension go back and get a Bangkok Bank account too. You'll find it is real convenient with how fast Thailand is embracing e-commerce, and scan to pay, that having different bank accounts at different banks makes it easier to track your spending, and expenses. Just something to think about later.

your story is well written and will be a valuable lesson for others. It’s very branch dependent. And bank dependent. As this point everyone should avoid Bangkok Bank. I have SCB and opening there was very easy. And there app is very user friendly

A like from me for the share - it's always helpful to read about what's happening on the ground, even with a Non-Imm Visa. And while I don't think there's some grand conspiracy to make life harder for expats, things are certainly getting worse.

Thailand is just going on-par with other countries. In my home country for example, a tourist cannot open a bank account. Never in decades before could

Thailand is not going on par with other countries in the region, though, some of which are doing their best to attract expats. Take Vietnam, for example, which is offering free ID cards with benefits to foreigners living in the country. I'm three weeks into trying to get a tabien baan from my local district office (I'm nealy eight years with a work permit, B visa and paying income tax) and it may eventually take a month; that's before I even get to the pink ID card - Thailand is a complete joke compared to Vietnam.

I had a very similar positive and turbulence-free experience last week with the Kasikorn branch in Central Festival Pattaya. In and out with my new account, bankbook, Visa debit card, and working ap on my phone in less than 45 minutes.

It's a changing world - the old ways of obstruction and roadblocks for no good reason - their days are numbered.
