Ok.. So on the advice from members of this group, I decided to book travel from BKK to BKK by way of KUL. I understand I can get off the plane, stay in the international arrival section and catch my plane back. HOWEVER, I may have goofed because I booked with two different airlines - will that make difference? Can I check-in while in the arrival check-in? Will I need a printed boarding pass?
US passport holder, multiple entry tourst visa.
(Robert before you turn-off commenting .. this is a visa related question because: A) my passport is full of Thai Visa and therefore I need a new one, and KUL is the fewest stamps to do a border bounce. B) I have other reasons that i don't recall right now)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice about a layover in Kuala Lumpur (KUL) while traveling on two different airlines. They are concerned about whether they can check-in and board their return flight without having to go through immigration, especially given their limited time (65 minutes) and the potential need to show a boarding pass upon re-entering Thailand. The conversation reveals mixed opinions on whether staying in the airside transit area is possible when using different airlines and the logistics involved, including terminal changes.
Thanks -- but I am wondering now, if I can even pull it off. I just doubled checked and I have 65 minutes from landing to departure.. If I have to go through KUL immigration twice - I think I will not make it in time.
You may even be pushed for time. KL immigration is pretty slow with everybody being finger printed inc children. The train go's around every 15 minutes and takes around 10-15 minutes between terminals
I've never yet been able to stay airside while on a transit involving 2 airlines. I've always had to clear security and immigration then check in to the airline desk and go back through. Different if your with the same airline. It also makes a difference on what time your return next flight is. They mostly dont want you hanging around airside for hours.
I haven't never done web-check.. Also I have never tried to 'check in' airside. Surely I can't be the first person to buy connecting flight tickets from independent airlines, independently. Honestly,, I dont have time to make it through security/immigration.
that was what I was wondering too., It might work OR at the worst case you're gonna have to get malaysia entry&exit stamps in your passport (BUT at least you won't need to burn a page with a visa sticker) ;)
I didn't notice until you mentioned it that he has different airlines. I think it would NOT work because you need to check into the airline which is outside of security.. :/ BUT in all honesty I don't know the actual answer. :(
a border bounce to KL by air would indeed use the least passport space ESPECIALLY if you only stayed in the transit area at the airport between your flight down and back because then you wouldn't even need to get entry/exit stamps to Malaysia :O Although when you go to stamp back into thailand you would need to show your boarding pass to prove you were on the flights :)
I don't understand how a check in at an airport is Visa related. For me this sounds the same as all the others question like: which hotel is close by, or which bus to take to, what is the best copy machine, where to get good breakfast because otherwise I can not stand in line for visa, what kind of shoes is better to walk to a consulate and so on.
No No.. I am doing a "Border Bounce" to activate a new entry of my METV. Instead of going to a near by land-border I am going to KUL by air. The reason being that I have few pages in my passport. KUL no stamp
