What should I consider before returning to the USA after living in Thailand for 8 years?

For better or worse I will be going back to the USA in the next couple of days. I have been here for 8 years. I plan to spend as little time as possible in the US and come back here to Thailand.

Any thoughts, words of wisdom, cautions, suggestions? Things I should do before I leave? Things I need to do while I am there?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is preparing to return to the USA after spending 8 years in Thailand and is seeking advice on what to do before leaving and while in the USA. The community responses include humorous suggestions, warnings about safety and expenses in the USA, advice on obtaining a re-entry permit and Thailand Pass, and reminders about potential cultural shocks. Overall, the comments reflect a mixture of lighthearted banter and practical advice regarding the transition.

Going back to the US is a serious culture shock. Be prepared for everyone around you being angry and on edge, and everything will be crazy expensive. And if somebody asks you, Trump is your God. Good luck.

Try not to get shot, those Americans will shoot anything, although they seem to prefer British soldiers, I took a few rounds from them in Iraq!

I think you maybe mistaken about the preference bit. We're pretty non-discriminatory about our shooting victims, any will do.

Get a re-entry permit at the airport if you need one. You can get everything booked and apply for your Thailand Pass before you even leave Thailand also.

Kinda doubt I can get a re-entry permit for a covid extension.

Can I get my next visa while in thiland. I saw they're doing eVisa now. So I should think I can but I dont have tickets yet. I wanted to do the special tourist visa.

oh yes you're right. Unlikely to get re-entry on that.

You can try applying and as long as you can meet the requirements they may approve it, but if they look at it passport pages you're required to send in as part of the application, they may see you haven't been stamped out of Thailand yet and question that.

I am having tax issues. My current residence is NC, and they think I need to pay them taxes while I am NEVER in that state. I am changing residence to TX where they have no income taxes. Also my driver's license is going to expire. Also, I am starting a new job, they think I live in the US and they are shipping me a computer. I freaking hate the idea of going back but it seems unavoidable. I mean the alternative is less favorable.
