TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation primarily revolves around the currency proof needed for obtaining a Thai tourist visa, specifically the requirement to show 20,000 baht in cash. Users report varying experiences with this requirement across different Thai consulates and immigration checkpoints, highlighting that while some applicants successfully enter Thailand without being asked for this amount, others have faced strict enforcement at the border or during visa application. There is also a discussion on whether proof of funds should be in cash or if bank statements are sufficient. The community consensus indicates that carrying cash is often preferred for entry, illustrating the mixed enforcement of these rules.

Doesn't matter you've been asked before or not, it is a law to carry THB 20'000 in Cash with you, this can be another currency than Thai Baht as well, no matter, just need to be in cash. If you never been asked, you just were lucky....
It is said to be in cash, but down to each immigration official if they accept any other form, bank statement, online banking apps, just the card itself etc etc..
for entry at the immigration in Thailand you have to show in cash if they ask. What you are talking is for get the visa, and not for the entry. And this is law....since about 3 years
Couldn’t they just have went to the ATM to get an acct balance or Take the cash out…฿20k baht is only €545 euro which some people spend on a night out in Thailand…..
Because it’s not a normal situation, you’re taking an international trip to a country which is overwhelmingly still a cash society.
Plus the point of showing the cash is to show you have actual cash.
Anyone can fake a bank statement and immigration doesn’t have the time or resources to send an officer with you to an ATM to pull up your bank balance.
Not to mention they’re targeting higher value tourists.
To be honest, unless you’re from an ASEAN country, you should have to show you have considerably more than 20k in cash, especially when getting a 30-45 day visa exemption or visa on arrival.
I think people travelling with only cash Can Be More bigger problems. 20k is not much For a holiday. Showing credit card(s) should Be More of trust to Have no financial problems.
Thailand IS not More cash society. Hotels and restaurants usually accept credit cards. And as you know with cards you get cash.
That rule of 20k is old and usually asked If you are not looking like a decent tourist ..
So the countless ATM machines and currency exchange shops are there for the Thais?
Go out to the bars, clubs and gogos. Everyone is paying in cash.
Go to the restaurants at the malls. How many Chinese/Indians/Russians you see paying with credit cards?
I’m out at these places 3-4 days/nights a week for years and it’s mostly cash outside of paying for hotels or eating at restaurants in your hotel or some tourist trap bar like the Hilton Rooftop.
Plus most credit cards have a bad exchange rate plus international transaction fees so why use them.
Even when I use my Schwab or Amex platinum which don’t have international fees, the exchange rate isn’t worth it vs cash unless it’s a small purchase.
Even iBar, Insomnia and Myst charge like 5% to pay by bank transfer and it doesn’t even cost them anything to accept that lol
that’s true lol. I carry cash because Thailand is a cash country. But lots of people don’t like to carry large amounts. It seems like it’s only crossing from other se Asian countries they want to see cash… I’ve never been asked to show money, flying from Europe.

Same in Vientiane Laos, you need to provide proof of 20k baht.

You have no business being in Thailand if you can’t afford 20k that’s pocket change to me
10m baht villa do you think I am going to pay cash? And she my wife I would never get a house with a girlfriend only let me guess English isn’t your native language or she you have piss poor reading comprehension skills
"I come from old money" 🤣. I don't think you do. Old money doesn't brag. Old money doesn't patronise. Old money doesn't need a mortgage to buy a villa. And old money doesn't think too much about visiting a Michelin restaurant, and definitely not the bill. Like my dad said to me about refueling a yacht, "if you have to think about it, you probably can't afford it".
Pretty clear they have the money just not in cash, while it is a requirement it’s rarely enforced so sometimes people get caught on it. Not really a big deal or needing to start trying to brag on Facebook, pretty cringe

I love these conversaties. Should be a Netflix sit com. Peace on Earth guys. Almost X Mass. 🎄🦌
looks like I struck a nerve with a broke pensioner.
There is nothing “asshole” about by Thai law need to have in one’s possession 20,000 baht that’s less than $600 my wife and I can easily spend that in a day and that’s not including our villa mortgage payment
you’re an a55hole because you’re arrogant. Obviously people have 20k if they’re in Thailand. Some people just don’t like to carry a lot of cash. All those “thank you for your service” compliments have gone to your head. Let’s set you straight… We think you’re a clunt
asshole. They use atm cards to get a little cash after arrival. They pay for hotels and dining with credit cards... Which you don't qualify for, asshole
Oh and why wouldn’t I qualify? I have 3 credit cards one through navy federal a military bank one through USAA and the other Charles Schwab.
Then I have my Thai banks I assure you I qualify you would never qualify for a Charles Schwab account. You have to have a minimum of US$100,000 to open a Charles Schwab account
I come from an old money family it’s not much to me. I didn’t even pay for the PhD I have from Oxford my parents did.
what's wrong with living in the jungle. My home is rural in the middle of the rice fields surrounded by small Thai homes mòst are my in-laws, can't beat it.
Copy of your visa - either the sticker in your passport or pdf evisa (the former signed by you). * if you had one.
Copy of TM6 departure card (signed by you) *if you were issued one - if you entered by air after July ‘22 you wouldn’t have been given one so leave the space on the form blank.
Passport photo (most offices have facilities on site or nearby)
1,900 baht
Some offices may ask for a TM30, which your hotel or landlord should have filed on your behalf. A screenshot of their filing it online will suffice as evidence you have one.
Recent reports from Laksi suggest it’s hit or miss as to whether you’ll need th TM30
Most offices are similar, although there could be small differences. I believe you have to use the TM7 made for the Jomtiem office not a generic one for example
let's be grateful they are not requesting to see 125,000 baht in cash then.

It’s them that should be grateful .

For tourist Visa they pretty much always ask for this , just come in on the 45 days , it's buggar all diff and get the 30 day extension ..
Josh ******
I did that but they held me at the airport for an hour explaining I should have got a tourist visa. This was a re-entry after being in Thailand for less than 6 months on voa + covid extensions
how does one become a burden for Thailand when you can not access government Healthcare or any other programs they offer without being a Thai national or without having a work permit paying into the social security system?
Rgr that. Thailand’s policy is if anyone is admitted to a hospital, they will be treated with payment or not. In the Philippines they will let you suffer and die out on the street without payment.
you're right I wondered the same question, they give you fuck all so how can you take advantage of that🤣

That is how it was for me a couple of years ago. What is worse, if crossing by land back into Thailand, they ask to see the cash, not bank statements or ATM receipts, cash. And if I remember correctly it has to be Baht, which is kinda funny.
10 years ago, my first time to Thailand, I also had to show 20,000THB is cash. Few years later, they actually take a copy of the money serial numbers because people in groups used the same 20,000THB.
This is a common requirement for a tourist visa and is required at most Thai embassies around the world. Even if the embassy does not require it, immigration can ask for proof of 20,000 baht at the border when entering on a tourist visa and can deny entry if not able to prove it.
