TL;DR

I understood I could transfer funds using wise (formally transferwise), and if I did it right it would show as an international transfer. I dont see how I do that, anybody have any ideas?

I contacted Wise and they said I can print out details of the transfer, which is not useful for immigration purposes, I believe.

The rant

I curse the people who invented paperwork. If they would have started with eWhatever instead of paperwork we would be in a better world today.

Tried to open Bangkok bang account today, unsuccessfully. They wanted 8,000baht because I am on a tourist visa. I have a KTB bank account already, I can use that I suppose.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is trying to find a way to ensure that their money transfer using Wise shows up as an international transfer for immigration purposes. They reported difficulties in opening a bank account with Bangkok Bank, as they were informed of a high fee requirement due to being on a tourist visa. Several comments provide advice on how to properly indicate the transfer purpose in Wise to meet the requirements, along with experiences regarding documentation needed for bank account openings in Thailand.

Yes, I have posted this before, I hope it helps you.

Been using WISE (old TRANSFERWISE) for almost 2 years.

Part of the SEND process asks you the PURPOSE OF YOUR TRANSFER. You must go to the very last item in that list. It will be your future obvious answer for your INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER PROOF.

I again just got m bank to print out my DEPOSITS list for 2021 and the code ALWAYS INDICATED INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER as this was the proof I needed for my ANNUAL VISA EXTENSION

฿8000 fee to open or minimum deposit?

Its for insurance. So if the account holder gets hurt or dead, someone else will get paid.

@Terary *********
they get a huge commission on that, it’s not really required

I've been asked to and always do print the details of each WISE transfer for immigration. As with most things, it may depend on what immigration office you use. For me it is Chiang Mai where these printouts appear to be accepted and appreciated.

can I ask if those receipts makes it unnecessary to obtain the bank statement? thanks

good idea!

8k baht for what? Insurance? I opened bank account with Bangkok Bank this week and only paid 450 baht for the card.
Jonas *************
Well, then 8000 is fine with you...
Jonas *************
If you follow the rules and get passoort verification and address info from the embassy as your supposed to no need pay anything.

That some foreigners like to pay "money" to ignore rules and they say thailand is corrupt is funny. They themselves are corrupt for not following the rules ;-)

Find the rules and follow them and you shouldn't need to pay any extra. Especially if you got writing mwithon the rules.

yeah - I rather pay the bribe than travel to Bangkok to get verified passport. Those of us not on retirement have limited time..

Do you have long-term visa? I am on a tourist visa. The bank manager told me I would have to pay the 8000 OR go to the embassy get certified passport and/or go to immigration to get letter of residence. OR I can get a marriage visa. I told her I need the bank account for the marriage visa.. She told me .... all the stuff I just said

They always try to screw you by making you buy some useless insurance or some other charge through them. Just go to imigration and get the residency certificate. Forgot what it costs but was very cheap. You can pay to get your photo done there to for like 150 baht. Then go back to the bank and they can't refuse you anymore.
Maxim ***********
1k baht for certificate.

Bangkok Bank wont try to sell you insurance.
Maxim ***********
@Terary *********
Oh, I understand why you asked my visa. You can open Bank account with Bangkok Bank regardless of the visa that you have, but the certificate of residency is non-negotiable. You can't open an account on your own without it unless an agent bribe manager, or manager bribe you.

Even with long-term visa?
Maxim ***********
@Terary *********
Yes, non-negotiable. I think you are implying that long-term visa hold more "value" when trying to open a bank acc, but it doesnt.

@Terary *********
I am currently getting the marriage extension, so yes, long-term visa. The bank manager is operating fraudulently. Most likely he is used to work with agent so he is by-passing that with you to ask you for a bribe. It's a pretty big bribe because with an agent it will cost you around 5k baht to open a bank account without meeting the requirements. You cannot open a bank account in Bangkok Bank without the certificate of residency (unless with agent or other form of bribe). The certificate of residence is easy to get at immigration, I got it last week. You need to go there and fill a TM30, then ask for residence. You just need the blue book and copy of ID of whoever you are renting from.

Bangkok bank won’t receive funds as intl fund transfer from Wise - I went in and tried and they said it’s the wrong code.

some of my Wise transfer to Bangkok bank does indeed show up as international funds transfer

@Kim ********
good to know!!

on WISE, reason for transfer "long term stay in Thailand", I may have got the terminology slight wrong. It should then show as "International Funds Transfer". I say should as its not 100% certain at times. If the transfer shows as "Interbank Transfer" I send the money back via DEEMONEY and transfer back via WISE again, checking that it shows as "International Funds Transfer".
Joanne *****************
@Terry *********
ok! Yes mine all say interbank transfer. Thanks so much!

the bank. We looked together at my transfers and the options wise has.

I don't think you can with Kasikorn have to ask international section for letter. Bangkok bank is ment to show as international. If its a lot of money I found it cheaper using my UK bank then no problem.

How to get your THB transfer marked as International Transfer by the Recipient Bank?

If your recipient Bank is Kasikorn Bank or Bangkok Bank:

Set transfer amount to THB

Add recipient details

Choose Kasikorn Bank or Bangkok Bank Public Company as the Recipient Bank

Enter account number

On Transfer Purpose: Select “Funds for long term stay in Thailand” or “Purchase of Property”

Review transfer details and Confirm

Select Payin method and pay for your transfer

You’re all set!

Your transfer should be marked as International Transfer in your recipient bank’s app, website, or passbook.*

*For Kasikorn Bank, ‘Trade Finance Deposit' marking is equivalent to ‘International Funds Transfer’.

When you choose reason for transfer in the wise app you have to scroll down to the very bottom where it says something similar to funds for long term stay .
Chris ********
@Paulus ********
i tried that and it shows up in the account with exactly the same code as an internal transfer!

I believe it’s only Bangkok Bank and using the reason for transfer as “stay long term in Thailand” flag it as an international transfer.
