You can get re-entry permits make the multiple entry kinda pointless. Multiple entry does not require re-entry permit so they are a little more convenient. My last re-entry permit taken me 10 minutes. The multiple entry option isn't too much more convenient.
I found the Android app to be pointless except that it will keep you informed where you stand in the queue. Hence, you get your ticket then sit on the beach until your number is called (well before your number is called). The app offers some other features but nobody seem to know anything about them (setting appointments for example).
I don't recommend volunteer visa. It's kinda made people into pariahs.
An IO told me once the ed visas for older folks aren't a great option either. It maybe good for single use but for several years maybe not the best option.
But if I were in the situation - I would try either.
I have had issues with VietJet. They are usually the cheapest but their systems is old and has problems. I tried to fly a friend VietJet and they need her to have a photo of my credit card. About 2 months later there was fraudulent activity on that credit card. Now I spend a few bucks more to avoid them.
Regarding nearness of flights I think it won't make much of a difference. I believe you will still go from international to domestic, also I think you will have to go through immigration in BKK.
