What does immigration check when entering BKK? I am coming on a tourist visa but only want to get a one way ticket as I am converting to a marriage visa after I arrive. I am thinking about getting a round trip ticket for the eVisa app and I then cancelling it within 24 hrs and then buying a one way ticket for the trip. Will it work?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand on a tourist visa, immigration checks may require proof of onward travel, particularly from the airline during check-in, rather than directly at the immigration desk. Passengers are advised to have a return or onward travel ticket ready, or a cheap ticket to a neighboring country as a precaution. Some travelers report never being asked for documentation at immigration, while others had to show proof only during their initial flight check-in.

I did the same a few years back but had trouble checking in at the airport. It was only when the Thai Airways rep came to the desk I was able to complete check in. It might be worthwhile seeing if you can get a tourist visa from the Embassy so you can show this to the check in monkey.

I have never ever been asked for proof of onwards travel at immigration in Thailand. I have however been asked twice by the check in staff at the departure airport. Both times I have explained that I am going to be leaving within my 30 days and they allowed me to travel. As others have said, if you’re denied boarding, just go online and buy a cheap return ticket to a bordering country, preferably one you can cancel and refund.

You'll need proof of onward travel within 60 days to board your flight to Thailand.

They will want to see your passport and boarding card.

Google “Onward Ticket” for $12 rental as a safety precaution…Don’t throw away the last plane ticket entering Thailand, they’ll ask to see the flight ticket 🎟

I flew from LAX was diverted to HNL then Tokyo to BKK. I was asked for forward travel at all three airports. I was even challenged twice about the 70 day stay. I’m here on a ME TR. Flew on ANA.

how long ago was this and what proof did you provide?

@Bill ********
got here 5 days ago. I have a return ticket through ANA so I just showed them that as well as my evisa.

Immigration will only ask to see your onward travel if they want to deny entry. Your airline may ask to see proof of a trip out of Thailand though. It might be worth it to buy a cheap train or bus ticket out of Thailand to keep in your back pocket.

I've never been asked about my travel plans by the airline. But I may check out bus prices just in case. What proof of bus ticket do they expect? Will email confirmation be enough or do the want a print out?

I fly very frequently from Europe or Singapore into Thailand never once in decades have I been asked anything about tickets. BUT, as people have posted here US airlines often go ask.

@Bill ********
never used to be asked much before Covid but since then have been asked 3 times out of 6 entries to show ticket or long term visa

@Bill ********
not really sure, I've never used it, but it's often recommended and can be super cheap. I've only used an onward travel site to print out a rented plane ticket
