In Thailand, background checks are primarily related to obtaining a Police Clearance Certificate, which is often required for visa applications, employment, and other official purposes. Very common.

School for who? You? If you don't have the financials, and no fixed income exceeding the required limits, Thailand is not the place to be. International schools can run US $30,000 per year. What happens when your kids get school aged?
