Hi, has anyone had any positive experiences with applying for a retirement visa without 800,000 baht in their account? Any recommendations?
Answer summary
The discussion covers the challenges of applying for a retirement visa in Thailand without the required 800,000 Baht in a Thai bank account. Many users suggest alternative strategies, such as using monthly transfers of at least 65,000 Baht to satisfy immigration requirements or recommending the use of agents who handle the application process. There are also concerns about the legality of using agents and potential risks involved. Users debate the pros and cons of keeping the required amount in the bank versus utilizing agents for convenience.

No agent it's actually illegal. It will catch up to you one day. Do it the right way 65 a month or $800 in the bank.

You can apply for Non-Immigrant OA Visa from your home country. There is no requirement for 800k in a Thai bank then. But you have to prove that you have 65k bath in monthly pension in your home country. Plus you need insurance and more.

I chose the minimum of 65,000 baht monthly being transferred directly by the U.S. Government into my Bangkok Bank account. I ask for an annual account statement generated by the bank about 2 weeks ahead of my going to the Thai Immigration Office in Roi-et. Then I stop by the bank on the day I go to Thai Immigration and ask for a letter certifying that I am the owner of that account and how much the balance is. It is a good idea to make a small deposit on that day so the letter has the latest balance information. I take that letter, the annual account statement, and the rest of my documentation (original passport + a copy of personal data page, signature page, and all pages containing my original non-immigrant type "O" Thai visa and all past extensions, a copy of the most current entry and exit stamps, Thai Immigration forms TM 6, TM 30, our Thai marriage certificate, front and back of my Bride's Thai ID card, all data-filled pages from my Bride's House Registration booklet, a hand-drawn map providing the location of our home, 3 pictures of my Bride and me together - one by our home address sign, one next to the entrance to our home, and one of us sitting inside our home, the filled out and signed TM 7 visa extension application form), 2 passport-size pictures with white background and no hat or glasses, and the 1,900 baht fee. I have never needed an appointment at the Roi-et Thai Immigration Office, and the process typically takes less than an hour after they accept my documentation and I have signed each page.

Dont tell anyone you use an agent for the 800,000, is it possible that ambitious immigration officials monitor these posts, i wouldnt know..,i just leave it in permanently, I know it makes nothing , but it's convenient . Everyone's got different budgets but I do believe there's talk of it going up to 1 million but you can put it into an interest account and its to be permanently in the bank , it's supposed to be a solution to the agent problem , don't know where i heard that .do i know a man whos wife's in immigration ? Depends who's asking.

It's the cheap Charlie's and tiktokkers forcing the change, upping the retirement criteria to 60 was another suggestion. Blame the drunken punch ups .it had been suggested that the over 60s were calmer and spent more and went to bed earlier.

Stephen Farrant I *believe* so, according to the actual law … from the second year renewal onwards. It’s not a method for the first application.

BC ********
BC ********
@Andrew *********
do the math. 7% on 800k is 56k. The non-o visa based in 50+ (retirement) without the 800k is 40k ? 50 k? for the original 3 months + 1 year extension. There goes about all your 7%.

The year after, you still have to pay 20k or so yearly, each year.

But those who had the 800k in the bank can now switch to the 65k per month if they started that 65k 12 minths before. So now you don't save anything that 7% a year, but you even lose money because you have go pay the agent every year.

It's a great solution for those without enough money, or if ALL your money is really locked up into whatever.

For those with enough money, it is mostly not worth it. And if you really have enough money, you aren't bothered with that few % extra on 800k.

There are so many debates on agency in Thailand in this group. here some said, agent is illegal and will be huge problem, do not use agent, Agents disappeared with your passport and money, and Thai immigration is on the way to hunt agents, you will be arrested when using agents, etc.. Yes maybe right. But I would ask that persons who always commented like that, If agents are really illegal and criminals, why do not ask this group admin? Thai visa centre, they are visa agent in Thailand. why does Thai police leave it so? Thai visa centre must have been raided and arrested long time ago, if they are illegal. or, why do not you report this to the Thai police to arrest them? They have open office and working on facebook well. They have all contacts too. They are illegal here, right? call the police to arrest them. 😂😂😂😂😂

Jim Davis What a rubbish answer. We are not talking about prostitution here. When you talk about something, do not evade the main topic. that is very bad way to talk. We are talking about agent in Thailand. There are people here saying agent is illegal in Thailand. So to find it out, they can call the police. Here thai visa center is the admin in this group. Then we can know if agent is really illegal in Thailand. I do not think agent in Thailand is illegal. even totally legal. Prostitution is clearly illegal like vaping in Thailand. So nooe is saying, prostitution is legal in Thailand. This can not be a topic to dispute. PS) how did you survive in this world with that empty brains or lower IQ? Have any of you ever wondered how the agents get past this very important obstacle?

The only logical way is to give a chunk of your fee as a back hander to someone they know at immigration. Immigration heads are constantly trying to route out these criminals, if for no other reason than to get their cut. Either way this cannot go on for ever, its a risky method for long term living, you could fall in love/ buy a condo/ start a fam. I guess its different depending on what country you are from. I have had 1 year visa for the last 2 years now without showing any money in Thailand. Only bankstatement from my own bank.

Extensions from Thailand though demands money in my Thai-account or monthly deposits of 65K thb or more and proof of employment.
Dan **********
Dan **********
I had cause to try for the alternative qualification : proof of more than 80k income per month. I easily had that in my bank statements for a year. But due to an international bank transfer delay, my statement recorded my late September transfer as arriving in early October. Meant although I had 12 monthly payments in 12 months - it was recorded that there was no payment in September and double payment in October! Refused!

Never mind that another clause in the statute (I looked it up) says that equivalent total deposits over the course of the year are also valid for eligibility.

After shopping around, I ended up having to pay a lot extra to a fixer to get it processed in another province.

I’d let my balance temporarily drop below the 800k for a few weeks (bought a swimming pool) because I thought it only had to be sitting in the bank for 3 months prior to the application (which was the advice I got the first time). It wasn’t clear to me that the rules changed year-to-year.

Dan Morrison Simple solution. Write a covering letter explaining the reasons for the discrepancy, sign it and attach to your bank statement. I've had to do this twice. Easy
Dan **********

Gary Parks you’d think it would be that obvious, but I had first my lawyer, then an agent attempt to explain the sane explanation, before coming back to me and saying “can not”.

It was just the height of bureaucracy for the officer to refuse on a made-up technicality like that. The monthly payment period like that isn’t even defined in the laws. It was just a variation applied by the local office - which is why I ended up having to travel to get it done elsewhere, slightly more sanely.

John Kenealy simple view in life, 800,000 bahts may sound a lot but it is actually USD25,000. That's peanuts in real terms. If you cannot or do not have that much in your savings, then you are a complete failure in life in finance terms. Honestly, if you are from Europe or USA, without that much as a safety net and a monthly income of an equivalent USD or Euro 2000, you will survive in your home country.

Why they care so much of others business?? what matters to them how other people spend their own money?? Just they are so jealous and poor losers only. You have enough money to hire agents! this is only fact. If I also have enough money or rich, I surely hire agents to do everything for me. How much it is? I do not care, because I am rich. Just imagining this makes me happy. Money is good! I am actually envy you because I can not afford it, but you can. and your life is easy, no worries about your bank in Thailand. You can save your times and energy and enjoy your life while poor foreigners prepared all nonsense Thai documents and go and back to Thai bank and immigration and waiting hours there. If just lucky, they can get the stamp on the same day. Then they post I got successful extension!! congratulations to me!! And all poor foreigners put likes! They have just changed the rules again.

When I renewed my extension of stay last year in March they wanted a 6 months bank statement.

When I wanted a renewal on Monday they wanted a 12 months statement, so I had to go back to Bangkok bank and order a new bank statement for 12 months which took 2 days.
