I am getting feedback that $2,800 USD per month is not enough money for a couple to retire in Chiang Mai Thailand. I'm 73 wife is 64. We're not party people. We have 2 dog and a couple of cats. We would like to rent a house in one of the moobans around Chiang Mai. Any thoughts?
Answer summary
The post seeks advice on whether $2,800 USD per month is sufficient for a couple to retire in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Numerous comments suggest that this amount can be manageable depending on lifestyle choices, particularly regarding housing and dining. Many people assert that living modestly while cooking at home and avoiding tourist hotspots will make $2,800 adequate. However, some comments emphasize the need for proper healthcare insurance and suggest ensuring access to additional funds for emergencies or visa requirements. The consensus indicates that while it is possible to live on this budget, comfort levels will vary dramatically based on personal spending habits.

Would you mind id I asked you a question? I'm planning to retire in Thailand in approximately 6 months. I'm not wealthy, but I do have a monthly pension of $2,800 monthly. In your opinion, do you think I will be ok with this amount? I'm 72, in great health, not a bar guy, I just want to be comfortable. What do you think?

Jeff Fouble for my opinion is very life in Thailand with 2,800$ (about 90,000/month)

But for the first year (my immigration area ) first year you have to show a statement of 800,000 THB (3 months)

And the second year can show pension ka 😊

I don't want to be negative, but before planning long term, spend at least 1 season during the field burning period.

Others could tell you when it is. I've never lived in that area but I know that a lot of people escape there for a couple months because they can't breathe.

There are other areas with better air.

Jeff Fouble then between 2 and 3000 dollars should suffice. Don't forget health insurance. Private insurance will be very expensive, if you can get it at all. There are cheaper local companies but very little is insured and you'll end up paying a lot yourself. But that's another discussion

You keep coming here asking these same questions and many people have given you answers but you don’t seem to accept them.

I’ve lived in Bangkok for 21 years. Retired 5 years ago. Chiang Mai is considerably less expensive than Bangkok, so $2,800 (86,000 THB) is definitely doable as an income. However you must first secure retirement visas for you and your wife and the 800,000 THB for you and the same for your Korean wife (1.6 million THB total). Untouchable funds in a Thai bank account.

If you can’t meet these criteria, your $2,800 a month pension doesn’t matter.

It is enough for a simple lifestyle. But if you want a car and travel around and eat out decently once in a while you better have enough savings. And then you need solid international health insurance. Without that dont even consider coming here.

Ofcourse you can live on 100K THB a month.

BUT / What kind of life are you expecting?

I look at about 130.000 THB a month at this moment in time. I play golf and thats expensive. I like to go out to eat and drink pretty often. I take some trips around the country from now and then.

Maybe I wont in 10-15 years when I am about the age you are.

But I would say you can for sure live a good life (no luxury) for $2800 / month.

Yes you can. At the beginning (first year) your burn rate will be higher due to accumulation and acclimation. Meaning you’ll be signing leases that require deposits, buying a vehicle and obtaining insurance. Then you will eat out a lot until you learn to buy quality market food and have stocked your kitchen. You’ll also make a few semi expensive mistakes. By the second year you’ll get down to 2K a month. And the rest will be entertainment. Enjoy Thailand Jeff!

Rent - around

/ mth considering your cats (proper, not modernized much)

Food - can live on 300 Baht/day (not being foodie, cook and sometimes go to local small shops) so 10,000 Baht/mth

Other cost like car fuel, go nearby places as short trips - 10,000 Baht/ mth (use smartly)

For your additional lifestyle cost - 10,000 Baht/ mth

Therefore, around 40,000 Baht per month is more than enough to stay in Chiang Mai. You can even reduce it to 25,000 Baht/ month.

You can do it. Itwill not be lavish. While medical is inexpensive it still costs. I save a bit every month in a separate medical/ rainy day account. My wife and I live on less than you propose monthly and it is less expensive here in rural Isaan. Consider capital expenses you may want to make. Vehicles, etc. Research the cost of having a cell and internet. Look up rentals in areas you might want to live to get more direct info on costs. Consider visa expenses and learn those ropes. The Thai government has good summaries of each type online. If you consider an agent for visa and driveres license help in Iknow a very good and honest one in the area you are proposing. She is not the cheapest but really knows all the ropes. You can DM me if you want. I am 73, from the US, married to a Thai woman. If you have some savings in the bank and receive $2,800 every month, you can live comfortably in Thailand. Rent and food for two people will be manageable. But don't forget that you're getting older, and health issues may arise occasionally. Medical care can be expensive, so you should have some emergency funds. Also, remember to renew your visa every year. Can trying to stay 3 month frist check if can stay here longer in the future

One thing I noticed about advice on food budgets. I’m no expert on cost in Thailand, but most of the higher budgets for food make me think these people do little to no actual cooking. It’s extremely easy to get cooked food delivered to you fairly cheap.

If you live in the US and are retired, how often do you eat out? I doubt it most meals every day. My wife’s family cooks most of their own food for two for around 5,000 Badts monthly. Just a reference point for some of you

We’re a couple (USA guy and Thai wife, also a USA citizen) who live in Bangkok and we do it easily for $1200 per month. We have money left over very often. Our nice condo is $258 USD per month. I give you some advice. There are 2 prices in Thailand. The Farang price and the Thai price. I had my Thai wife do all the inquiries and for instance when I inquired as a farang about the condo lease I was quoted 13,000 baht per month. My wife laughed when I told her. The next day she went alone and inquired about the same condo and she was quoted 8,000 baht per month ..she got it. Find a Thai friend to inquire for you. Good luck.

At today's exchange rate, 90,000 THB. That's good enough to be comfortable but you'll also need to be frugal, it's not enough to replace new iphones ever year. Keep in mind in the past year I have seen the exchange rate go from 29 to 36 to 29 - 25% difference so on the better year's you'll need to save. If you are both Farang things will cost more, best to make a local friends you trust.

So around 90k thb per month for 2 people.

It all depends on your lifestyle, particularly if you will cook yourselves, if you can eat Thai food, medical & insurance costs etc.

It should be enough given what you’ve said. But be mindful that changes to exchange rates + inflation + lifestyle changes (e.g. as you get older, if you need to hire a carer etc), that may equation may change.

The only issue I don't see covered in this thread so far is the cost of healthcare. Nearly everyone over 60 has at least one chronic health condition. Accidents that require medical treatment can happen to anyone, but the older you are the more expensive it usually is to treat the consequences of these accidents. Put simply, you need to have reserve funds to cover accidents and illnesses, plus whatever you might need to take care of existing conditions. This may affect your budget requirements to the point where $2,800 isn't enough, but most people can get by quite comfortably.

I think your biggest problem will be health insurance. It’s a requirement for most long term visas. I have heard it’s very hard to get after age 70. As you age it would get harder.

I don’t live in Thailand but visit every year and have a partner that has dual Thai and USA passports I visit the kingdom with. For us $2800 usd would not be nearly enough. I think a rule of thumb you could use is that Thailand is about 40-50% cheaper than the USA.

Also unless you plan to totally abandon the USA you will either have to maintain some sort of household there are pay a lot of money and travel like tourists when you visit USA.

My rent is $200 for a 3bedroom 2bath 2carpark port. If you want to be fancy and be a dumb tourist sure $2800 is not enough if you want to go to the local market 4times a month eat out 2-4 times a week have a reasonable car and not drink yourself to sleep every night you should be fine. Get a gym membership get some hobbies make some friends that are not capitalizing on a tourism type of business and you should be living pretty in my humble opinion of living here for 5 years making a range of 1K-3k per month. Btw my father is retired here and he was living on retirement and social around what you have easily with him and his GF. So you come in you be observant you shop local you eat at local spots which taste just as good as the tourist restaurants and ultimately you get what you pay for 💯🫡

Everyone has a different idea of "comfortable." Figure out what you plan to do and calculate it for your own situation. Generally speaking your biggest expenses will be food, accomodations and health care. Accomodations including utilities can be anywhere from 25k for a modest condo to 50k for a nice big house. Food can be anywhere from 15k to 50k depending on how often you want to eat Western food. More on the lower end if you want to eat mostly Thai food. More on the higher end of you want to eat mostly Western food. Health care can be anywhere from 5k to 20k depending on your age and health. You can live very comfortably on the upper end of that range so I say 92k is more than enough. Certainly not luxurious but more than enough.

I do it on 50-55k bhat a month just outside Chang Mai. I have no mortgage as I paid if the house costs on building completion. It’s not an extravagant life but I do drive a car , have a moped and gym membership (1k a month ) ,attend Thai football (2k a month including snacks and drinks) a few drinks and coffees at home during the week (4k a month) and a meal out once a week 6k . I also have expat food delivered twice a month which costs about 10k total I don’t go mad on restaurants and clubs as it’s not my thing and I am happy to spend time at home with my family; cooking, watching sport ,films and listening to music As a Thai , my wife earns about 14-16k which I told her to keep for herself and my step daughter. I also pay all the utility (2-3k a month) health insurance (5k ), fuel costs (1k ) and put away 4 k a month for our annual holiday it works out very well well for us and we have been able to holiday at least once a year and normally twice. You don’t need 100k plus a month unless you have an extremely active social life , enjoy drinking and eating only Western Foods at restaurants and frequenting bars and gogo

every night and or you rent an expensive villa and or have multiple children at an expensive expat school. I guess though it’s up to individuals and it’s as much a question of lifestyles ,but as a guide the majority of people I know in Thailand would struggle to spend 100k a month plus and live on much less. My own spending normally averages about 45 k a month and 50k max with all misc luxury expenses like impulse shopping. I also keep 400k separate for my married visa and have other contingency funds overseas.

What is that for? A day, a week or a month. If a month thats over 1 million baht a year so yes. But if your not married to a Thai you have to keep a minimum of 400K baht per person in the bank so that starts to make renting a decent home, buying a car and medical insurances a bit more difficult. Actual cost of living unless living the high life is way cheaper than in the west but there are cons as well as pro's.

If you're on a 90-day waiver you're okay but if you need to get a retirement Visa that's a whole different ball game I mean you have to add another I think $2,000 plus you have to have 800,000 baht in the bank. First off, you need to research your ways of staying, ie visas; the rules are about to change AGAIN, and using tourist entries is not viable in any way; Next, you need to do some very simple research: rents, costs of groceries, expenditure for your particular lifestyle and interests, any travel you'd like to carry out ongoing. I agree with most of these comments but I think it's quite obvious that you mean USD as Americans are the most likely people to think that $ means their currency also you didn't say if that was for a week, month or heavan forbid a year. The thing to remember is that Thailand is no different to any other country in the world, living expenses depend on your living style and the major factors are if you have already purchased property or renting plus can you live like a local or are you going to try and live like a tourist. If you live like a local you can live quite well on a 200 to 500 Baht a day but if you live like a tourist then you can easily burn through 5000 Baht and much more if you are staying in a hotel and eating in western restaurants. The best advice it to come over on a long holiday and try to live the live you are expecting after retiring and see how much it costs because only you know what you will be spending your money on.

It may be more accurate to say that many Thai people pay less because they don’t shop at the same places as foreigners, don’t eat in the same restaurants as foreigners, but that really depends on where they live and what they have access to. Greg Dake Dakin agents are for broke OAPs that's don't meet the financial criteria and living day to day without financial savings, no health insurance and probably riding around on a honda click with a top box and basic insurance only, Thailand doesn't want these cheap Charlies and it's become more clearer year on year it's making it harder for them, Have funds, savings, life insurance, correct financials for retirement visa and your fine the rest should honestly go home, sounds harsh I know but it's the truth, it's also a pain in the ass also when the OAP scratched side of my car because can't balance his bike and caused 80k damages he can't afford and crying, get the correct comprehensive insurance or don't ride the bike 😡

Jamie Watt I live in Pattaya in £1000 a month but that's just for food and bills I pay my rent 12 months in advance out of my savings I go out twice a week I have a live in partner and no I do not pay her anything, I love Thai food and my partner is a excellent cook some days I will spend 600 baht upto maybe 800 baht if doing a shop but that can do me meals for days so some days I won't spend anything if I go out with my partner we go to quiet bars playing Thai music large bottles of Singha and Leo about 70 baht and Thai food very cheap only downside it opens around 11.30 pm and is open all night sometimes i don't leave till 6.30am 🥴me being the only non Thai but always made very welcome biggest bill I have had is 1800 and lost count on how many beers I have had 🤣

Jamie Watt yes. I go to 7eleven buy a Coke Zero, some crackers, nuts, bread, Chips, some eggs and milk 150THB finish already.

Afternoon I go Big C buy some green tea a brownie and some rice with vegetables another 100THB finished again.

Night time I buy a beer from 7eleven and some snacks for sitting on the beach... another 150THB gone.

It certainly is possible surviving with 30k THB a month but that's not comfortable but only surviving

David Lew the visa requirements is one thing. But a couple without kids living on 2800 in Chiang Mai is very comfortable lol. Im in Bangkok, own a new car, 30k baht rent. No fixed budget, i do, eat and buy whatever i want and need. Im not even close to 100k baht per month.

If you don’t hang out at nightclubs and bars every day, 2800usd is a very comfortable budget. Especially in Chiang Mai. (Though i couldn’t imagine living there)

Jeff Hendry I love Bangkok coz it has everything I need, and a great travel Base. And no better food scene anywhere else in the world. Its just very easy and convenient. Good public transportation, and you never run out of new areas to explore. And I can take the car straight onto highway and go anywhere. Koh Samet is close for example. Air quality not great at times, but that's where Chiang Mai comes in; Very very bad air in Burning season. But its a cheap place to live.

I love Hua Hin, might even move there some day. I go Cha Am and Hua Hin often.

Pattaya attracts allot of low quality foreigners. Great for partying they say., I spend one sonkran there, really really crazy stuff. But I could never see myself living there. Dont like the vibe

But people are different. Many don't like Bangkok. Personally I think its the best city in the world to live in IF you have stable finances.

I dont like Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui. I love Bangkok, Hua hin, Cha Am, Koh Samet (favorite), Koh Chang, Koh Kood, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Khao Lak, Chumphon, Kanchanaburi, Khanom. And I also like Chiang Mai as vacation destination OUTSIDE burning season.
