Good news for expats and digital nomads in Thailand, especially for those who couldn’t open a Thai bank account.

Wise will officially launch its full services in Thailand starting May 19, 2026, and this will clearly make life much easier for many people.

You will be able to top up your Wise account from a Thai bank, pay via PromptPay QR codes like a local account, receive money using your own QR like a local account, and get a Wise card, both digital and physical, in local currency.

In practical terms, this brings Wise much closer to a real local bank account, without the administrative constraints of Thai banks.

For anyone struggling with banks here, this is clearly a major improvement.
Answer summary
The announcement that Wise will begin operations in Thailand from May 19, 2026, has sparked discussions among expats and digital nomads, particularly regarding its banking functionality. Wise accounts in Thailand will facilitate local bank integrations, allow users to make payments via PromptPay, and provide both digital and physical Wise cards. However, users express concerns about the ability to withdraw funds from ATMs, as it appears that Thai-based Wise accounts may not permit ATM withdrawals, which could limit the service's practicality for many. Further complications are anticipated surrounding the documentation requirements to open a Wise account, particularly for those holding specific visas. Overall, while Wise's entry may simplify certain financial transactions, it raises questions about banking access and the implications of local regulations for foreigners.

I see no reason to getting this in lieu of my US-registered Wise card/account. I load up USD from my pension (direct deposit in US bank) and brokerage accounts to Wise in USD, then convert what I need to THB. I have a KBank card/account (LTR visa) that I use for QR and utility payments. I don’t see an upside to changing this workflow.

Countless other foreign apps already allows PromptPay. The issue is that it only allows you to scan QR codes linked to business account while irl most vendors uses QR codes linked to their personal accounts.

“Based on February 2026 reports, your U.S.-registered Wise account should not be affected by the May 2026 regulatory changes that limit ATM use, provided your address remains outside Thailand. You can continue using your US Wise card for ATM withdrawals in Thailand, as these new restrictions apply only to accounts with a Thai address regulated by the Bank of Thailand.”

Actually this kind of thing has been available in Kasikorn Pay & Tour cards. Anyone could get one & preload it with as much as you want. This other deal with Wise (Who I use often to trans money & they are great) but it is just something similar. What folks like DTV & others need is a bank or bank like account that can also pass the test of proof of funds for Immigration & visa extensions right? That is where folks who cannot get a bank account have the problems.

People thought the DTV visa meant long-term freedom in Thailand. It doesn’t. It’s still a tourist visa. Valid for five years? Yes. But that doesn’t mean you can stay five years straight—and it definitely doesn’t lead to permanent residency.

Then came the wake-up call: bank accounts linked to biometric IDs… and millions of accounts shut down.

-Now zoom out-

Digital baht.

Surveillance cameras everywhere.

Digital IDs.

SIM registration with digital ID.

Biometric travelregistration no passport needed anymore.

This isn’t coincidence. It’s a system.

Look up and Google “Social Credit System Thailand” and decide for yourself where this is heading.

And the stricter visa rules and border crackdowns?

You really think that’s just about scam centers and illegal work?

Thailand isn’t getting more relaxed. It’s getting more controlled.

StunningHummingbird3221 you definitely can stay 5 years straight taking a short trip every 6 months or so. Your an idiot
StunningHum************
StunningHum************
Anonymer Teilnehmer 807 You should definitely reread the visa regulations for the DTV. It clearly states that the visa is valid for 180 days per visit and that you can use it for 5 years. The DTV visa is not suitable for becoming a permanent resident because you have to interrupt your stay in Thailand after 180 days, but you must leave the country for at least five days after 360 days at the latest. I'm quite sure you're the idiot here.
StunningHum************
StunningHum************
Anonymer Teilnehmer 807 You can stay 180 days per visit its like a multy entry tourist visa... You can not stay 5 years. If you don't leave or extend after 180 days, you have a over stay, a Visa violatiin and Visa is unvalid after it. But please do me a favor and stay 5 years without leaving or extending the DTV and find out by yourself! Lets find out who is the Idiot after than. Or after your Visa get revoked.

Only the Privilege Card Visa or an LTR Visa is valid for 5 years at a time without you have to leave the country or renew after 180 days. Understand the different

Except they will remove the ability to withdraw cash at an ATM.

A Thai Wise card linked to a Thai address will be worse than other Wise cards. Still not able to withdraw cash at Thai ATMs without the THB 250 fee, no Apple Pay, perhaps no Google Pay and it’s even unclear if it’s even possible to withdraw money in Thailand after all. It’s nice for Thai people who do often international transfers but other banks will become cheaper for international transfers as well for sure. For withdrawing money abroad there are better multi-currency cards around. Like the Krungthai multi-currency debit card with zero withdrawal fees until December 31, 2026 whereas the Wise debit card has a limit of €200/month concerning withdrawing money. A Wise account linked to a Thai account seems to be useless, except maybe when they are offering very high interest rates but interest is only available in USD, EUR and GBP at the moment so THB probably won’t get any interest
Michael *********
Michael *********
Advantage? Hmm, well, not really! The disadvantage is that if you have a Thai address registered with Wise, you won't be able to withdraw cash from ATMs with your Wise Card in the future. That's why it's recommended to always register a German address for your Wise Card.

Why would Thailand prioritize PayPal or Wise rails for foreigners when those systems are still controlled by foreign entities? From a sovereignty standpoint, it would make more sense for the DTV financial requirement to be held in Thai government bonds or with a Thai financial institution for the duration of the visa.

I've been using Wise for a while now and recently loaded up a big chunk of money ahead of my upcoming trip to Thailand. It was super handy for pulling cash from ATMs without the hassle or risk of carrying loads of cash from home — no worries about losing it or theft.

Just found out in time (thankfully before I fly out) that under the new local licensing rules kicking in from May 2026, the Wise card issued through the Thai-regulated entity won't allow ATM withdrawals inside Thailand anymore. That's a real bummer and a big downside compared to before — I was relying on it for easy cash access.

I've got plenty of time to withdraw that lump sum now before heading over. Disappointing move by Wise, especially since it was one of the best low-fee options for travelers.

Has anyone tried TAGTHAi (or Thaitag/TAGTHAi Easy Pay) as an alternative? I've heard mixed things — some say the exchange rates aren't great or there are hidden fees. What's the real deal with this card for tourists? Does it let you withdraw cash from ATMs easily, or is it more focused on QR/PromptPay payments?

TagThai app is horribly bad. With good AIS local 5G connection, each click takes 10-15 seconds to response. It takes on average of 5 clicks before you could get to scan the QR code or generate yours.

Then, 50% of the time you have to restart the app at the final step and start over again.

The worse one, you will have to restart the phone if you are on a video call while trying to use the app to play.

My phone is Samsung A36 5G. This app is like 20 years behind current technology.
