Thailand was like 30% of cost living in Australia 5 years ago.

Now it is like 80%.
Answer summary
The discussion revolves around the perception of rising living costs in Thailand. Initially considered much cheaper compared to Australia, many commenters argue that while costs have increased in Thailand, they believe it has not reached the level suggested in the claim of 80%. Some assert that living on local diets and avoiding tourist areas can help maintain affordability, while others highlight significant inflation, exchange rate impacts, and rising prices in both Thailand and Australia, leading to diverse opinions on the current cost dynamics.

You’re so not on the ball. You probably live in a very tourist place. Where would you be able to eat in a nice restaurant with 9 people including bear and wine for about AUD150. Where would you find a 3 bedroom house with a pool for AUD1,200 a month? In Hua Hin you can. Please stop put nonsense on the forum. !

Furnished studio or 1 bedroom apartment in a condo with a small gym and pool, internet provided, in Chiang Mai, long term, between $700 and $800 AUD. In Melbourne, unfurnished 1 bedroom unit, no pool or gym, no internet ... around $1300 per month if lucky.

Not sure they have a calculator 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thailand is far less.

Meat, chicken, seafood, pork all far less.

Alcohol excluding wine half the price or less.

Tobacco 90% less

Rent 50-75% less

Electricity 50% less

You can’t have been back in Australia a long time.

Snapper $70/kg

Prawns $40-$50/ KG

Chicken Breast $11-$16/ kg

Pork Chops $15/ kg

Lamb don’t even go there!!!

Limes $29/kg

Rice $10/kg

Eggs $8 dozen

WiFi $80/ month

Average power bill start buying candles

Thailand eats Australia alive for cheaper costs of living for like for like in 95% of day to day spend!!!

That is totally ridiculous A friend of mine recently bought breakfast for four in a simple diner and it was $240, here it is $15.

A three bedroom house in a good size town in Australia is how much $5,000 a month? Here? $400.

I could go on and on but sometimes replying to ridiculousness just doesn't mean anything.

It depends where you are from. The Australian $, is like the Canadian $. It weak compared to the USD, British pound, Euro. Thailand is not that cheap because the Thai Baht is strong. Correct ..

Mainly due however to a quite ridiculously high Baht , open to interpretation, and of little use to the average Thai citizen .

Comparing to Canada prices..If you want to buy western imported goods yes those items are more expensive here than I can buy in Canada.. like imported goods from here or Asian countries to Canada are way more expensive than here..

But compare fruit, vegetables, poultry, electricity and rent for examples..they are all under half and more than what I pay in Canada.. quit example, 4 pieces of chicken breast in Canada around $12, here around $3.50 thats a third less here..depends on how you want to live here makes it expensive or not.. in Canada its expensive for everything.

Don't know about Australia but if you go to neighboring Laos for a week or two, you will see that Thailand is heaven on earth. In Laos everything much lower quality and limited choice for rip off prices. In Thailand 7-11 everywhere with plenty of snacks, cookies you can buy for as cheap as 10-20 baht, plain yougurt, fruits, milk. You will not find this in Laos and even if you will find low quality small cookie pack for 50 baht, milk not existing basically. No plain yougurt. Protein shake in Thailand 42 baht in Laos 77 baht. Hotel rooms in Thailand much higher quality with much lower price. In laos hotel rooms with zero maintenance for decades. Prices in Laos literally triple in 5 years. Go to Laos or neighboring country then come back to Thailand then you will appreciate and understand how well organized, efficient and price performance oriented Thailand is.

The cost of living in Thailand, is about the same as it was 5 years ago. There were a lot of discounts (hotels, airfare, restaurants, entertainment) in the COVID and post-COVID days. Those COVID discounts are gone. Prices are back to normal, with some increases accounting for inflation and strength of the Baht. At the most 10-20%, but the prices in the USA have increased 20% or more also. It's a wash.

You will be hard pressed, if not impossible, in many cities in the USA to rent a small apartment for $1,000 per month. And when you find one, it won't be very nice. Bangkok or Pattaya at $1000 USD or 31,000 THB / month your living in a luxury condo. You can rent a very nice place for $500 USD per month, or less.

It is definitely more expensive. I do a 2:2 FIFO roster in Australia and live in Bangkok. Earnings AUD and living in Thailand since 2016. Everything is getting more expensive, but that's the whole world, not just Thailand. The stronger Baht and weaker Australian Dollar isn't helping either, obviously.

The Thai government is also making a huge push to try and legitimise, i.e. increase its tax base, its domestic workforce as estimates indicate only 6% of Thai nationals pay income tax. This will have a huge affect on the cost of products and services as this number increases

1st the Australian dollar is worthless overseas. 2nd the Thai baht is over inflated / over priced. 3rd Most other south East Asian countries in the region there currency's are better value for money when you convert the Australian dollar. Indonesia for over 20 years there currency conversion has always been around the same, that's why Bali is great value. Have been going to Thailand since 2007 it has never been cheap it's a myth. People don't go to Thailand because it's cheap they go because they enjoy the vibe but even that has its limits now that the Baht is very over inflated on its value.

While prices have gone up in Thailand, they have gone up more in Australia. One thinks Jim may be confused between cost of living and cost of being a tourist. I'm in Takhian Tia , just outside Pattaya. I pay around $7 dollars per month for water. In Australia $90. Electricity is 10-14 cents per KWH, Australia 32-40 cents + 1.20 per day supply charge. A very nice fully furnished with quality fittings 4 Bedroom house on 850 SQM block $450,000 the lot. Try buying just the land for that in Australia. Case of VB (i wouldn't drink this shite but just choosing the cheapest) $60-$70. Case of Singha, $35-$45. As a high income earner medical includes the medicare levy + private health insurance $12,200 per annum in Australia and there is still a raft of things they will not cover or pay. In Thailand I pay $3,400 per annum for absolute top cover with no out of pocket. Every day we eat lunch out at one of the local restaurants, lunch for two pad Krapow Moo Grob & Pad See Ew would be a typical lunch in Thailand $6. Your not getting a meal for two for $6 anywhere in Australia, even at the cheapest food court Asian your looking at $12 to $15 per dish. Class one car insurance on a 65K car, Thailand $454, Australia $900 and up. A 20KM taxi ride, Thailand $7 and Sydney $55. Mobile phone post paid (60GB Data & 300 mins free talk) Thailand $9 per month, Australia, I would think $30- 40 per month. Now I did not move here because it is cheap, I came for the lifestyle. If you stay in a 5 star resort , eat at fancy restaurants and go out partying every night, it is probably not that cheap anymore however from my experience, what I see everyday the evidence is overwhelmingly clear, the basic costs of living in Thailand is easily 50 to 80% cheaper than Australia.

The PURCHASING POWER of your DOLLARS or EUROS in Thailand

The PURCHASING POWER of your currency is more than TWICE as high in Thailand as in Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand

Anyone who plans to live on expensive imported items such as French wines, imported sausages, Swiss cheeses, Australian beef steaks, New Zealand lamb fillets and Alaskan wild salmon has not really arrived in Thailand.

The prices for such luxury imported goods should not be used for a comparison.

A typical shopping basket in THAILAND compared to one in your country, in approximate percentages:

*** a TV set, a notebook, most electrical items: rather one to one - same price

*** Cars and motorcycles made or assembled in Thailand: cheaper!

Only imported brands are almost twice as expensive in Thailand as in your country

*** clothing & shoes: cheaper, but it depends on the quality and brand

*** Rentals in Thailand are much lower: 25% to 45%

*** ELECTRICITY: 30%-35% of the price per Kilowatt in your country

*** municipal WATER fees: something like 10% to 20%

*** FISH and other seafood: 35% to 50%

*** PORK and CHICKEN: 35% to 40%

*** VEGETABLES: 35% to 40%

*** FRUITS: 30% local fruits. Imported fruits cost about the same than in your home country

*** cost of one hour of labour: 10% (!!)

*** a scooter: 40% to 50%

***GASOLINE and DIESEL: depends. If you are from Europe, you find the Thai price real charming

*** Restaurant food: 30% to 40%

Beer and all alcoholic beverages in general do not belong in a typical shopping basket for comparison!

*** Non-alcoholic beverages: 40% to 50%

*** BAKED PRODUCTS: 30% to 40%

*** EGGS: 40%

This means: Anyone who can spend 1500 Euros or Dollars in Thailand, can enjoy a living standard as if he/she had 3000.- Dollars or Euros at home

Of course, always assuming that you have done your homework. Most initial investments need to be secured:

***health insurance

*** furnishing

*** means of transport

*** costs for obtaining the stay permit (some require a deposit in the bank)

If you need imported foods - go ahead but don't complain about high prices.

I avoid imported foods - as I can find everything on local markets for less than half the price I would have to pay in my home country. Fish, poultry and pork is cheap, and vegetables cost less than half.

Rentals are less than half, diesel & gasoline is less than half from the price in Europe, clothes and shoes are cheap.

Restaurant meals cost only a third of what I would have to pay in my home country. . .

It depends on your lifestyle if you think Thailand is expensive.

I don't need any Swiss cheese. I don't need Australian steaks. I don't need French wines. I don't need imported stuff.

You are comparing a cheap Honda car to a Rolls Royce. My typical shopping bag does not contain any imported food and goods

That claim is rubbish.

Thailand was never “30% of Australia” in any normal comparison, and it’s absolutely not “80%” now.

In reality, Thailand is still about 40–60% cheaper than Australia overall, and often even more outside tourist bubbles.

Australian housing, energy, healthcare, and services are in a completely different price league.

Anyone saying “80%” is confusing expat hotspots with reality or just making things up 🤷‍♂️

Absolutely bullshit!!!

You can get a reasonably good 2 bedroom and 2 bathroom condo on the beach iin multiple areas of Thailand (both sides of the gulf) for 20k baht. That's at most $1000/month AUD. That same apartment on any beach in Australia would be a minimum cost of $3500/month but more likely closer to $5000/month.

Internet in Thailand is going to cost you 300 baht per month, which is $15 per month. I pay $80/month in Australia. In Thailand I can eat very well for 200 baht per meal, There's no option to go out and eat for $10/ per meal here in Australia.

There is a wide range of Thai cost of living. The current minimum wage in Thailand is about $12 a day. If you live amongst Thais, eat rice and Thai food, Thailand is cheap. Thailand is the #2 rice exporter of rice in the world. Thailand imports wheat. Wheat products are imported and expensive. Dairy products are imported from Europe and Australia. Beef is imported from Australia. If you live amongst expats and eat Western food, Thailand is expensive. A meal at a Thai food court cost about $1.50. A more Western meal at the mall could cost $7 to $10 a meal. see the difference.

If you just try to copy your lifestyle across the costs can be similar. You have to go local and adjust with what is good value.

For example, try getting a one hour massage in Australia for 250thb.

But if you go Villa Market and buy imported products or things taxed heavily like wine, you are going to pay the same or more.

Geo arbitrage and Thailand is significantly cheaper. Without it, it could be the same or more.

If you eat and consume local you’ll be at a huge discount in comparison to the UK, USA, Australia.

Similarly with apartments the price per sq M is the same in pattaya as it is in Manchester. What differs is people are willing to accept smaller in thailand with a trade out for amenities and communal space.

Yes if you compare hotel dining prices.

However, a simple dish in Thailand like Pad Krapao still costs 40 thb (2 AUD) at many establishments that are frequented by locals.

If you say cost in Thailand is 80% of Australia then in Australia it would be 2.5 AUD for a piece of Burger. Can you actually find that? It is more like 8 AUD isn't it?

Then it is 2 AUD vs 8 AUD , which means Thai food is still 77.5% cheaper than in Australia.

Last week, my girlfriend and I took a taxi to the Terminal 21 (Rama 3) shopping mall. My PC had been running too hot, so I took it in for service. After that, we went to the optician; my glasses were bent, and they repaired them for me. Then we had a Japanese all-you-can-eat buffet. To finish the day, we went to the cinema with popcorn and everything. After the movie, we took a taxi back home.

All of that together cost only 1,400 Baht for both of us. I don’t know any other place in the world with a better price-to-performance ratio. In Germany, that wouldn't have even covered the taxi ride. If someone seriously finds this too expensive, they won’t find a good life anywhere in the world. Greetings from Bangkok

It’s not just inflation, which is constant everywhere. It’s the strengthening currency. My dollar bought 30 baht a decade ago. Now it buys 21. One of many Examples: To get a kilo of laundry washed has increased from 20 baht to 50 baht (150% inflation). With currency strengthening fire me, the cost has increased from 66 cents to $2.30 (a 250% increase). So it is more expensive.

Craig Merk Mercer your talking 10 years it's been 21 -23 thb for years. Now compare that inflation to your own country where an average shit house now is a million AUD eat out in Australia dinner for two 150$ with a couple of drinks. Rent in Australia minimum 650. Nicish digs up that to around 800 a week. Then there's all the license and water and power bills Australia is way more. Inflation is everywhere. More so in in Western countries. Thing is wages haven't moved at the same rate. A house now in Oz is over 10x earnings. As opposed to 4 a few decades ago.

I have lived in Thailand for almost 10 years and I haven't witnessed massive inflation. I have though witnessed big swings in the British Pound against the Thai Baht.

So I turned to Google for help. This is what it told me.

In the 10 years between 2015 and 2025, Australia experienced an average inflation rate of 2.80% per year, resulting in a cumulative price increase of 31.85%.

Over the ten years leading to 2024–2025, inflation in Thailand has remained very low, averaging around 1.1%.

Now it has to be said that I don't live in one of the big foreign tourist hotspots but Hua Hin is close by. The inflation figures feel about right for local Thai products and services. But imported goods seem to have rocketed. For example North Atlantic Cod is over twice what I was paying 10 years ago.

Jim Davis yes it is. I just moved from Australia to Hua Hin. If you think cost of living here is 80% of that in Australia you are smoking crack or trying to live a fully western lifestyle here with everything imported.

Dont even know how you would pay the same rent for an equivalent place. Its just not possible.

Jim Davis I don’t b think I ever ate in Thailand for 100 THB (yes, street food). Obviously the restaurants are more than the street food. I am by no means saying I spent a fortune, but cost is why I refuse to eat out at home. In Thailand it’s cheaper to eat out, but obviously. Not free

the province where the poorest people live . No aircon. . You live in a bubble I think you need to come to Bangkok . It is not cheap anymore . That why many Australian and western expats are leaving it to expensive 🤣😳
Paul ******************
Paul ******************
Paul Ross that’s interesting as I never mentioned what province I live in. And I most definitely don’t need to come to Bangkok. The air quality there is awful, and it’s also full of tourists.

@Paul *****************
My water bill in Thailand is much lower than my water bill in America, but the difference is smaller when you factor in all the bottled water I have to buy in Thailand. Electric and gasoline are actually more expensive in Thailand but rent is significantly cheaper. Food is also cheaper as long as you're not buying import stuff.
Paul ******************
Paul ******************
Stephen Lodewick I use a 3 stage water filter. Fine for cooking foods like pasta with. I use bottled water for the kettle to make tea. Not that pricy at all.

John ***********
John ***********
Jay Brad And don’t forget to add in the gas for central heating and combi boiler etc plus its standing charge. Daily standing charges on uk gas and electric push up the bills and they keep increasing them charges.
Eric ***********

Jay Brad 1000 baht for air on 10 hrs a day? I dont believe that. It must be a one bedroom one bath 35 sq meter or less.

Paul ******************
Adam Thompson when I lived in Wales in 2022 the ‘standing charge’ on my electric bill there was around £48 each month. That’s just to have the electric switched on and active, before the actual usage amount is added. I know plenty about the UK and how Ofcom are swindling millions out of the UK populace.

Shaun Asquith my electric bill is around 450 baht a month, PEA brain farts not withstanding. Diesel for truck, 40% ish cheaper than UK. Internet £30 cheaper a month than the UK. I could go on but I've run out of my cheaper beer so it's time for bed!

I think per kilowatt pricing is a better comparison. Thailand is actually higher than Texas at the Thailand government rate and even cheaper compared to the 8-baht per kilowatt that some condos charge. So if I'm using the same amount then the bill and Thailand would be higher. Of course, if I'm living in a one bedroom condo I'll be using less than a four-bedroom house with central AC and heat.
Mclaughlin *******
Mclaughlin *******

that’s not cheap 66£ is 128$ aud

My power in oz 380-400$ a quarter

That’s aircon on all day every day in a 3 bed 2 bath unit
Paul ******************
Paul ******************
Shaun Asquith not true. My electric bill this month was £66 sterling. That’s with AC in the house running, pool pump running for 7 hours a day each day, lighting, recording studio, etc.
