They’re up to it AGAIN!! Fricking Bangkok bank just locked my account AGAIN! Now! I just moved to Jomtien from Cha-am and went to the branch here and there they told me it has been locked AGAIN, NO NOTICE! and I have to go back to the branch I Hua Hin to present the information they need in order to have my account reopened!

I MEAN, WTF?!!!!!

Fortunately after the last time about 8 months again when they lock it and other foreigners accounts with NO NOTICE, and every cent I had was locked without access, I said F THIS, and opened a second account at K Bank and monthly put half in one and the other half in the other bank so I always have access to money when these MFKRS decide to just lock your money up!

FYI! K Bank took about 15 minutes to open the account, Bangkok Bank was an hour and a half so I highly recommend if any of you are coming to live in Thailand screw Bangkok Bank and go to K bank !!!! 😡🤬
Answer summary
The post discusses the frustrations of a user whose Bangkok Bank account has been locked multiple times without notice, leading to significant inconvenience. Comments reveal a shared sentiment among expats about Bangkok Bank's poor service and frequent account restrictions, often tied to visa issues and compliance demands. Many recommend switching to K Bank or SCB due to their better customer service and fewer problems. Users emphasize the importance of having multiple bank accounts for easier access to funds and the need for proper documentation like visas to avoid account issues.

It seems, that the Banks, worldwide are holding onto the money.

I tried to do a remittance from HSBC.. after 2 weeks, no money transferred.

When I contacted them, they made some lame excuse that the account number I gave them for the receiver was incorrect. When I had given the officer at the HSBC bank my card to copy.

And the cheek of it was, they returned the money to my HSBC a/c and charged me the remittance fees for doing absolutely nothing!!! 😡

Ever since I transferred money from Australia into my Bangkok Bank Account they have locked my account 3 times in the last 2 years. It is not huge amounts, just a couple of hundred thousand baht. I work in Thailand and pay my taxes. I think they are targeting people who have lived in Thailand (me 11 years) because of the huge influx of Russian, Arabian & Indian. I have had this bank account for the entire time I have lived in Thailand, so I do not know why this has happened.

strict,, regulatory-driven crackdown on foreign accounts, resulting in widespread account freezes and closures, particularly for expats and tourists. This operation, which intensified in late 2025, aims to curb money laundering and "money mules” : If affected, you must visit a Bangkok Bank branch in person with your passport, bank book, and supporting, evidence (like a valid visa) to verify your identity.

Targeted Accounts: Foreigners—especially Russians, but also Westerners—without long-term visas (e.g., those on tourist or some, digital nomad/DTV visas) are facing sudden,, unexpected restrictions on funds, sometimes without notice.

You can outfox them with a letter of demand for either immediate closure of your account and refund of the balance or a signature of receipt of your letter of demand. In 30 minutes, you walk out of the bank with your cash as the manager has no valid grounds for not refunding your ballance.

Over 2025 I know at least 30 people who have had their BKK bank locked. All different visa types, all sorts of stupid reasons, non of which are valid. I am also worried mine will eventually be locked as I lack the patience to go to a branch. My last visit just to get a new card when mine was about to expire took 4 hours. That was even being at the bank on opening and being about the 6th person to get a ticket.

be very careful with your words, there's a reason people don't name and shame Thai businesses. And, bkk bank has been told to do this by the Royal Bank of Thailand. it's about massive fraud via phone and internet scams, and the use of "smurfs" to launder the money. it is a multibillion baht criminal enterprise, and getting smaller as banks help to curtail smurfing and sim cards are being regulated to stop it. it is a pain in the ass, I know, but so is crime. and, don't think you can't be sued for your words above.

I have three accounts and all made me verify my account. But BB took it a step further. They just didn't want a phone bill receipt, they wanted my retirement visa copy (again) and a copy of my lease. So I brought down my lease extension which was for the current period I was in Thailand. They wanted me to drive back and get the first (expired) lease. I had it at that point and closed my account.

Now I've learned Bangkok Bank is the only bank that will directly accept Social Security payments. I'm going to start my SS in December, so it looks like I might have to crawl back there. LOL.

Bangkok Bank is only having these issues due to dodgy agents opening accounts for people on tourist visa, and providing money for their visas. I haven't had a bank account locked here in Thailand but I think everyone should have two different banks and keep some cash and gold in reserve just in case it is needed. I started doing this after my Canadian bank locked my account last year and force me to fly home before I ran out of money. Now have two bank accounts in Canada with different pensions going into both accounts plus a reserve in cash and gold here.

Jaap Roest not true. I used an agent that did everything the legal way and my visa is 100% correct.

From what I understand, the government has come down hard on the banks, especially Bangkok bank because they were not adhering to the Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti Money Laundering (AML) laws with the latter being a big problem in Thailand.

It doesn’t mean if they close someone’s account down, they’re suspected of money laundering, it means they have to bring the documents current with what’s required for these laws.

My point is that the way Bangkok bank handles it, “just locking a customers account with ZERO notice” is unbelievably a horrible way to conduct business. I don’t care what country it is.

A simple call, or email requesting the necessary documentation certainly is in order.

Figure this, I have had a Bangkok Bank account for 14 years, the branch was from Thabo near Nong Khai.

I received notification that on 15th January Thabo branch was closing and my account would be managed from that date by Nong Khai branch.

On the 25th January I attended the Nong Khai branch to see about having my account transferred to Sattahip branch near where I was living.

They said go see that branch and should be able to open an account at the Sattahip Branch.

I successfully opened a new BKK Bank account at that branch, transferred ALL my funds to that account and left 100 in the Thabo account.

I rode my motorcycle to Phuket a couple of weeks ago and received a call from the Sattahip BKK Bank Branch informing me that they had been Audited by their compliance team and that I would need to obtain a certificate from my home country Embassy stating and confirming my address here in Thailand 🇹🇭.

I informed the clerk that my Embassy would have NO CLUE where I reside within Thailand, nor would they care.

I said that the ONLY agency that knew my address and confirmed it was Jomtien Immigration and that I would obtain a Certificate of Residency from them and present it to the bank upon my return from my road trip to Phuket.

Yesterday I attended BKK Bank Sattahip branch and the freshly obtained COR, only to be once again informed that it needed to be issued by my Home Country’s Embassy in Thailand.

I decided to close the account, much to my SHOCK the customer service agent told me that my Thabo account was still active and I could simply TRANSFER all my funds via the Banking App to that account and everything would be fine.

When I asked, what about the COR for that account, I was duly informed that the Thabo account was NOT subject to the same RULES/SCRUTINY as the newly opened 2026 account at Sattahip. 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

Go figure???

another reason to just not have a bank account here at all or just use it for on demand tranfers and have only little sums in there but no savings.
David ********
David ********
OP
Dany Nomads yeah, I sometimes wonder but you have to have one to maintain your Non O or Non OA visa. Either you have to have your 800k on deposit, or prove the foreign transfer of at least 65k THB per month in both cases it has to be a Thai bank account.

I do the Transfers now because I never liked the idea (I really don’t know) of having that kind of cash in a foreign bank.

Even the 65k per month I wind up sending a lot of that back to my U.S. account every few months because I can’t spend it all. Not even close!
Dany ********
Dany ********
David Walley non-oa does not need a thai account. you get that visa outside of thailand via eVisa and you get about 2 years out of it until you need to re-apply. can allways use your home bank.

for non-o i would also go the „transfer way“. its such a waste of money to let it sit in a thai account with little to no interest. but yeah you need a reliable thai bank for that as well…

for me with a dtv i cannot open a bank. but tbh i do not miss an account here at all with all the other options available.

The foreigner has to be present, the agent does all the paperwork and acts as an intermediary.

I’m a bit surprised that a Moderator of a visa group wouldn’t know more about what an agency representation is, and how it functions.

Just sayin. Not intending to be rude.

Last October, I’m sure you were aware, tens of thousands of foreigners accounts were closed down with no notice. I was at the bank for 6 hours, and they had my money tied up for 3 weeks.

I’m happy for those that didn’t have to go through it.

I thought it would be a one time thing but fortunately I prepared for the worst, and opened a second account.

well that’s your negative perspective. I put the information on here to alert those moving to Thailand that Bangkok Bank wouldn’t be a good choice. Better to choose K Bank or as you can see in most of the comments, people agree and some as I are offering additional advice. Unlike the few like yourself you have to use these groups as a way to project and attack people who are simply trying to be helpful to others.
