What alternatives to Bangkok Bank do expats recommend for banking in Thailand?

UPDATE to my post about Bangkok Bank locking account AGAIN:

When the branch in Jomtien called the Hua Hin branch (where I opened the account) they told them that I needed to bring in a new lease agreement.

So, I had just signed one for 12 months a couple days prior in Jomtien.

When I arrived at the Hua Hin Branch I was now informed, “yes, we need this, but it is not enough! We also need the property owners ID card,” which I didn’t have, because I wasn’t told!

This is the consistent type of incompetence I have personally dealt with from BKK Bank. Why they can’t seem to provide an entire list of the documents needed at one time, is beyond any reasonable question!

I have had enough with this bank so I closed my account and will replace it with a second account to my existing K Bank account! I have learned, the way banks operate here it’s best to have more than one account with enough money to survive for 3 to 4 weeks in each.

What banks OTHER than BKK Bank and K Bank do you recommend?

And have any of you with a K Bank account had your account locked with or without notice as many of us have had happen to to use with BKK Bank?

The point is, if you’re in the planning stages of living in Thailand, skip setting your account with BKK Bank. You WILL regret it!

Yes there are some who have been with BKK bank for many years and never had an issue. I’m happy for you. But those of us who have joined in the last few years are under way more scrutiny than others who have a longer history with the bank.

But to arbitrarily lock a person’s account, blocking their access to their own money , WITHOUT so much of a call or email to say, “hey, we need this document, please bring it to a branch near you by blank date,” is beyond comprehension, and horrific business practice.

Good luck! Welcome to Thailand!
Summary so far
The original post details frustrations with Bangkok Bank's customer service, specifically regarding account locking without proper notification or clear documentation requirements. The author ultimately decided to close their account and is seeking recommendations for other banks. Comments reveal a general consensus of dissatisfaction with Bangkok Bank, experiences of similar issues with account locking, and positive recommendations for alternatives like K Bank, Kasikorn, and Krungsri. Many expats share that it's advisable to have multiple accounts to avoid banking difficulties.

Is there any country besides Thailand with this nonsense rules where you need to go to exact branch where you opened account. You can’t use any branch of that bank.

At least in my country if I open account in XY bank I can go to any of their branches nationwide and get/do same service.

Even requiring a lease agreement to have a bank account is retarded. Thais would be outraged if it was required of them.

This is a common problem in Thailand as they do not train the staff properly. We see it all the time in immigration offices where rules vary from office to office. They constantly have to make decisions without full knowledge of the actual rules and asking colleagues means they lose face.

BKK bank are now working in conjunction with immigration and you'll find that re-newal of visa needs your landlords ID as well as tax i.d. They will also "freeze" your 800k for 4 months as soon as you ask for a year statement. Jumping to other banks only delay the inevitable that they will all sing the same song in the near future.

BKK bank is the poor bank in Thailand, I'm full ok with the law and lock my account 3 months without any reason, must go few times in agency and wait long time to talk with agents no polite. I have two account in Kasikorn, one more the 20 years and never have problem. The best for me is have bank account and keep cash hidden for live one month if any problem or have credit card from another country bank .

Bank branches in Thailand are seperate entities of the main mother bank wherever their main branch is, mainly BKK. Think of the as 7-11, Macdonalds or KFC. They are franchises, so may differ slightly in how they are run. I must also say that, if you go to the main Bangkok Bank site, it does list main rules of guidance that are requirements for do's and dont's, that they operate by, as a general group of franchises. That has been my experience.

I'm getting the feeling BKK Bank wants to close certain accounts. They were the "go to bank" and may have opened too many. Maybe agents used shortcuts, and they need to clean up their act.

My account is blocked for the second time, my 3 month contract is not acceptable, even though I am extending it and continue to live at this address for more than a year.

Explaining to them that as a retiree I could be living one month here and one month there, and that my 1 year visa should be all I need, falls on deaf ears.

You go to immigration or the and bank be prepared.

We go nowhere without all our originals and copies of every document. Irreverent of the task we are doing.

Others say that’s an overkill and maybe so but when we are querying to produce other documents we have everything with us.

It’s like some others state TM30 doesn’t have to be done again if you return to your same address. After being away I let others just do what they assume is right but it’s not.

The TM30 is supposed to be done and others just ignore doing it and state they haven’t been queried by immigration.

Like one of our friends going to get a residency certificate and I asked them where was their TM30?

There statement it’s not required and I corrected them and stated if you are going to Chon Buri Immigration they will asked for it and I was correct they did ask and they had to do TM30 and got fined as well.

If you plan for every circumstance there won’t be an issue.

If you don’t plan you plan to fail.

You may blame the bank but you need to prepare for any situation otherwise you will suffer unfortunately.

That is the problem with the banks in Thailand, all branches of the same bank operate differently in different provinces, it's a recipe for disaster in my opinion. You can withdraw cash from an ATM in the province where you opened your account without a fee being charged but in any other province you get a withdrawal fee. That's taking the piss.

The only reason I'd use BBB is to get my Social Security from the US. You can get a direct deposit only with BBB and skip the intermediary US bank. You have to get a special account that according to them you can only withdraw in person at the bank. Seems kinda screwy as well.

Graham Margetts First rule of admin (and this is worldwide): if a person provides all the required information on their first visit, invent something an additional requirement.

Many years ago in Qatar, having passed my Qatari driving test (yes, really) I had my application form for the full licence prepared in Arabic by the 'official scribes' at the Traffic Police HQ, presented that form plus all the necessary certificates and sponsor's letter, etc, as listed. After shuffling through the papers at least twice, the nice uniformed policeman on the other side of the counter pushed it all back to me, stating "No good. No passport number."

Now two things: first, nowhere on the form did it ask for my passport details; and, second, the scribe who typed out my form would have known about this invisible requirement but had said nothing.

Despite all this taking place at about midday in the open air in July, there was only one solution. That is to say, accept that it was entirely your own fault for not having the foresight to understand the unwritten rule, smile sweetly, thank the person concerned and return again at 06:00 the following morning when the place opened, when it would be relatively cool and when people would not yet have had time to ramp up their anger. Sorted....

Stephen Howell It’s not part of the lease, but yes, typically these docs are included attached with the lease. So, when I was told by BKK Bank they needed the lease, I took the lease knowing that immigration always wants the ID, but the bank isn’t immigration.

It would seem, if our visa is up to date, the bank knowes all of these documents are in order, why BKK Bank thinks they need them as well is beyond me.

K-Bank doesn’t ask for any of these things.
Stephen ********

David Walley Bangkok Bank has been severely burned with fraudulent bank accounts and fraudulent transactions. They are obviously exercising greater caution. Several bank officers were dismissed in the Pattaya/Jomtien area for accepting backhanders to set up dodgy accounts. Under the KYC regulations, banks can introduce their own policies on who they want as customers. I'm sure the bank will not be too grief-stricken for you to go to another bank. You don't meet their requirements.

I you think there is incompetence, why not go back to your home country?

America is sanctioning countries by inhibiting access to their own money.

Can’t you make a deal with the bank?

OP
Peter H Bates I don’t think you understand the nature of these “Groups” if you believe that posts like mine are harmful, SIR!!

My post is intended to benefit those who are coming to live here in Thailand and hopefully save them some aggravation, by choosing a bank that’s causing so much grief with expats.

Read this post and my prior one and you will find that the problems much of which derive from the bank’s outrageous procedures and incompetence dealing with those procedures are widely experienced and there’s a general consensus.

Moreover, it’s not “MY” type of posts that make people not want to participate in groups, SIR, it is YOUR types of posts and comments that lash out at people who are attempting to present usable information to those who read it and cause it, NOT for people like you who obviously have something to

Prove to yourself and you use the abuse of others to do so.

Next time it might benefit you to read many of the comments so you don’t make a comment that presents yourself as the outlier, which in this case make you appear foolish.

So take a bit of your own advice, and if you feel the need to lash out at posts, perhaps, SIR, IT IS YOU THAT SHOULD RETURN TO YOUR COUNTRY!

I bid you GOOD DAY! 🙄🙄

Rather than calling him multiple names behind your anonymity why not just say why you think he’s wrong?

John Wenman imagine everyone had to go home for pointing out where things are at fault or giving their opinion on something they experienced. Might as well move to North Korea then but the reality is that that would just about be everyone coz you’d be some serious hypocrites to play it off like none of you ever did that. My “anonymity” has got nothing to do with the point besides you wanting to snoop around like a creep. Stick to the point

Peter H Bates why don't you? Or why even read his post if you are so triggered about what he wrote? You bored and just wanting to post some crap on Facebook... The guy has said what he has experienced and others can read it and use it to decide or they can ignore it ..

You should really get a life ...

Joey Wim cheers, these trolling posts by people like him are stopping the group from being used correctly and some people scared to post. Then when they do it is constant abuse... This ends up with loads of posts about nonsense. Unfortunately this group has more than it's fair share of nuggets.

My kasikorn bank needed some extra information last year so they sent me a mail and froze my banking App until I went to the bank, but my account wasn't locked, card and cash machine still worked.
