For instance while flying to Hong Kong is significantly further than flying to Tokyo Hong Kong is a way cheaper destination. I took a look at an RT Miami/ bangkok and was pretty surprised that around the end of the year into next year is just about $1250, whether you fly east or west (Qatar and Turkish air)

Fuel is a commodity, same as gold, wheat, or pork bellies. Their daily prices are determined by the commodities markets. Yes, an airline commits to buying fuel months in advance, but they also need to replace what they are using at current (high) market prices. Selling it at below market prices while replacing it at high prices is a good way to go bankrupt.

Yes but they also have no certainty when the prices will drop therefore they need to charge more now to be able to afford in future. That goes for the airlines for jet fuel and also the airports for logistics ie suitcase carriers & food trucks, so the airport will charge more to the airline for use of these. Basic economics

The companies (airlines in this example) therefore increase costs to maintain profit margin, not forgetting at the same time less people will be flying due to airport/airspace closures and fear so their likely to sell less flights and as such a reaction in income, so prices increase to try and balance the budget books
