Answer summary
The user, an Australian citizen married to a Thai national, seeks advice on obtaining a long-term visa for Thailand while still residing in Australia. Commenters suggest applying for a 90-day Non-O visa in Australia based on marriage, followed by establishing a Thai bank account upon arrival in Thailand to facilitate a 12-month extension of stay. It's noted that if the user is over 50, there are retirement visa options available. Proper documentation, including a certified marriage certificate, will be necessary for a smooth application process.

Yes you will need to have documents certified by the Department of foreign affairs. I am assuming you were married in Australia.

Anthony van der Craats Yes, a few steps to go through back in Australia if that is the case. This is the process for the UK so the steps should be similar with the same ending -

1. IN THE UK: Marriage certificate legalised by the FCDO in Milton Keynes (2 documents, original and legalised copy))

2. IN THE UK: Marriage Certificate AND the Apostille from the FCDO Translated (2 translations from 1., now 4 documents in total)

3. IN THE UK: Marriage Certificate AND the Apostille from the FCDO AND their translations verified by the Thai Embassy in London (4 verifications from 1. and 2. giving 8 documents in total)

4. IN THAILAND: All the above (i.e. all 4 documents & their translations, making 8 in total) Legalised by MFA in Bangkok

then register your marriage at your local Amphur.

Get a 90 day Non-O visa based on staying with Thai family and when you get to Thailand open a bank account transfer in the required funds and get a 12 month extension of stay based on marriage. If you're over 50 there are also a number of options based on retirement

Dave Griffin I saw your comment about being 65, if you move to Thailand before you reach retirement age, 67, you won’t be eligible for a pension. Alternatively you will have to move back and live in Australia for 2 years when you turn 67 before you can continue to receive your pension
