I and thousands of others had bank apps locked without a single notice. My sim card name and bank account name are same but still had a locked bank app. There are thousands of foreigners in my situation.
nothing free for sure. In best case they require you top-up 50 baht to your phone account and they give your top-up receipt as evidence of your name and passport number
The situation is very same in large cities and in the Bangkok area. 5 banks declined to open with my 10 year long term residency LTR visa. Most banks ask work permit now, they don't give a queue number outside the bank to open an account if you can't show the work permit. Situation is a full chaos, kasikorn is the same. One bank asked me to go to their headquarter office to open there as only this office can make the final call to open or not. The situation forces almost every legal visa holder to use a middlemen (agent) for this very routine transaction. Pretty ugly situation right now
When things have to be done legally according to the book all stuff fail miserably in Thailand. There was no issues at all when agents were opening bogus bank accounts for anyone who paid
Bangkok Bank locked my app but I was able to enter the bank and withdraw all of my cash, so the account itself was not locked. I think same for everyone, only the app is locked.
In Thailand every hotel gets passport copy, every bank gets passport, if you don't want to give 2000 thb deposit motorcycle rental shop keeps your passport.. it is very common to give passport info in Thailand
I suggest stopping by at the bank's headquarter office if you live in Bangkok. Lately almost all banks ask for a work permit. If you have one no problem, if you don't then either they copy your info and tell you that they will call within 1 week but they don't, or they ask you to personally go to the headquarter office to open it. My last trial was today at Kasikorn and SCB, both failed.. yes my visa qualifies for a bank account.
