You can leave for an hour to get a new 180 days, but obviously looks better if it's a little longer than that.

Took about 10 days in total (London), but they asked for an additional document in the middle, so possibly longer than usual.

No you're not. You get stamped on for 180 days, and need to report after 90 days if there consecutively, but no need to report after arrival.

He was simply responding (quite rationally) to my point about it potentially being related to visa waiver, in which case a return or onward ticket MIGHT be required, even if he has a pending DTV application. The airline wouldn't know about any DTV.

Do you have a passport from a country that has a visa waiver with Thailand? If so, that might explain why they don't need to see any visa.
