I wouldn't be surprised in they began asking people to show their Thai tax payment records when entering on DTV

Thais quite frequently change the entry requirements . They could easily change the 6 months DTV entry to 30 day entries, like they are doing with the 60 day visa exempt or require you to have paid tax in Thailand

May as well go back to Thailand and apply again for the DTV once the METV has expired

But it ISNT staying for five years . It might be "nearly" staying for five years , but it isnt staying for five years

They have already told you the info once , then told you again . Do you need to be told again ? You cannot get a DTV whilst your METV is still valid

UK bank account 5% interest rates , which is 40 000 Baht a year if you keep that 800 000 Baht in a home bank account , Visa agents fees are less than that
