In Bangkok you can apply something like 30-40 days before your "admitted until" date. I think it can be different in each immigration office.

I think you get three months at a consulate and then extend that inside Thailand. But I guess it also depends on what you're going to study. Not an expert in ED visas, though.

Maybe research and contact some schools first.
