I heard a rumor that American’s can get the METV at a particular embassy in Australia instead of needing to get it back home. True or false?

nope, you're confusing the financial requirements for a 'retirement' visa.

The financial requirements in Australia to get a 6 month METV are AUD$8,000 or 200,000 Baht if applying for Multiple Entry Tourist Visa

It's been like that for a good while now. There is no residency requirement for foreigners to get a 6 month METV from any of the thai consulates in Australia. The closest one to Bangkok is Perth.

here's the Melbourne requirements - non-citizens need proof of an e-visa only. Will likely be the same at the others.
