TLDR : Answer Summary
A post circulating in a Chiang Mai expat group seeks help identifying a woman accused of stealing from a friend's store in Nimman. Several comments suggest reporting the theft to police, while others debate the implications of theft and the appropriateness of public shaming. Discussions surrounding the nature of the crime, potential mental health issues, and different cultural perspectives on theft create a contentious atmosphere. Some users express skepticism regarding the account, suggesting the story may not be as straightforward as presented.

Another fatal flaw of the dangerous blend of social media and Thai law. The the west we are ‘innocent until proven guilty’, in Thailand it’s the other way, so anyone can accuse almost anyone of anything, and they have to prove otherwise. Worse things going down in Thailand, 4 words = Koh Tao Death Island 🏝

My Sherlock question is: At what point did they realize the assailant had pocketed or bagged something, and was this image obtained from a store security camera after the fact, or did someone take it with their phone?

Report to the police and then bring the police report to check for further CCTV at the mall or complex, you may find further lead.

I wouldn't report it to the police. The repercussions (possible deportation etc) will far outweigh the trouble that the crime caused.

I used to work in a shop and old ladies would steel for the thrill because they said there was no excitement in their lives.

I would just have a word with her and talk to her like a human being, if you see her again.

but she's not an old lady doing it out of boredom or necessity, if she can afford to go to Thailand for a holiday then she can afford to buy gifts, they're so cheap there's no need to steal, stop making excuses for her.

my point is that we don't know why she's stealing.

So, I think it would be a good idea for the shop owner to just have a chat with her to see what's up, before calling the police to put her in prison, extort her and then deport her.

it's beginning to look that way, brother. It seems people don't want to think about their own entitlement. I've been a security guard in the past, too. Most people who have weapons are just scared, most ppl who steal are looking for excitement or are just hungry (not in this case) but they're all just people. They just need a chat.

it’s a shame you cannot mentally comprehend that there could be multiple scenarios going on here with this woman, yet you wish her to be put in prison and deported.

Firstly do you know the male posting this photo of the woman and asking if people know her ? It’s narrow minded people like you that are the problem. And someone stealing small items from a shop for whatever reason be it mentally unwell or whatever their reasoning doesn’t come close to your statement on your wishes towards them. So seems you are the sick one

you obviously come from a culture where it’s ok to commit crimes. In Singapore where we have minimal crime there are serious punishments for stealing, and if you deal with drugs it’s the death sentence. creates a safe society. but you claim she is mentally ill?

I never said I agreed with crime but I’m aware that individuals commit crime and I’m aware that all individuals are different and don’t need to be judged by your narrow minded outlook.

Firstly you do not know if this story is true.

Secondly you do not know anything about the poster posting two photos of a female backpacker and asking who knows her and claiming she stole.

And I can go on and pin point much more ! You be a rubbish judge and jury

I was just a student at the time. They weren't my shops. I eventually got beaten up for trying to stop guys from stealing liquor. I felt that stealing an expensive item like liquor by force was unacceptable but I let a few sweets and things slide when the old ladies would come in and chat to me.

I probably wasn't the best employee, lol.

It would, but things are tough in the west, financially. I've seen so many people I know become homeless over the last 2 years. If she really is stealing, which might not be the case, it's small fries. She hasn't tried to kill anyone etc. Maybe she has mental health issues, maybe she's just bored. It's big crimes like ministers taking huge bribes that should be punished severely, I think.
