You say for a year, but that doesn't mean cover for 365 days consecutive, abroad, or does it? Find it hard to believe any travel insurance would cover a trip of one year long.

But legally it isn't his account. His girlfriend opened the account with her id card details, therefore technically and legally the account is hers.

with respect you should of commented in general comments. Don't know why you've replied directly to my comment. Unlike a lot of people I have had bank accounts in several locations outside the UK and in the UK. I've never used Barclays so telling me directly about Barclays is irrelevant. If you read my comments to Stuart Chiverton, I told him that Nationwide will let you keep your account open as long as you give them your overseas address. I never mentioned Barclays. Also I have had HSBC accounts both overseas and here in the UK., whilst living in different locations to the one's where I opened the accounts.

I know here in the UK you can close your bank account and open with another online. No need to go to your own branch or the new bank. I don't know if it can be done from Thailand. I reckon if you could, the only way it could be done would be with a VPN that you could get a UK IP address from.

Exactly, insurance companies want to insure younger customers with attractive premiums because less chance of them making a claim. The older you are and especially if you have underlying health issues, then be prepared if you want peace of mind to pay extortionate premiums. Better to maybe look at self insure. Or if your from the UK or any country that has universal health for their Nationals, stay in your own country if you don't want to risk having no insurance.

Depends, if your from the UK., Nationwide will let you keep your account even if you don't live in the UK. As long as you've opened your account whilst resident in the UK., then all you have to do is provide your overseas address to Nationwide and all is good.

VPN M8 all it is, is say you wanted to watch a TV channel from another country. Once you've subscribed to a VPN service, you login, scroll to a country where the TV channel is streaming from click a server and it'll connect to that server in the country where the TV channel is, so that you can watch that particular channel. For example a channel in the UK, select a server in your VPN list of countries, in the UK, then the UK channel thinks your in the UK, so no block on viewing the channel. Hope this explains, sorry I'm not to good at explaining, but if you Google what is a VPN service you'll get a better idea maybe.

Last December I got a Thai friend whose house I would be staying at for thirty days to email an invitation letter for the attention of the Embassy. I attached it in the e-visa Portal. Got the visa. Because it'd been a long time ago that I was last in Thailand, when you were given an immigration card to fill in on your flight,a TM7 I think it was, which are no more required, I wasn't aware that you had to report to immigration where you would be staying until a chance meeting with two immigration police in a coffee shop, who asked my address I was staying at. Anyway he checked with his immigration office and they didn't have a, is it TM 30 about where I was staying, so they told me to go to immigration with my friend, which we did. I took my passport and my friend spoke to immigration, who asked for there ID card. My friend showed his ID card and with my passport all was solved and no fine as some people suggest you get. Also I thought because my visa application was in the Embassy computer system, I presumed immigration would be able to access that info., but obviously not.
