I hear ya! My two kids are in Houston and flew to see me up in Canada this summer and the logistics were a nightmare. We also had to cancel and reschedule. My trip to Thailand in March-April was easier than theirs from IAH-YUL.

I don't know your carrier's specifics but usually if you can notify them 2 hours prior to scheduled departure it's not considered a "no show" and you might have options.
