What are the requirements and experiences for applying for the DTV visa as a freelancer in New York?

Hiya! I just got approved for the DTV and wanted to share my details. Hopefully, someone finds it helpful!

Consulate: New York, USA

Visa Cost: $400 USD

Turnaround time: Just under 2 business days; applied on Thurs. 7/25 late afternoon and got the approval email today 7/29, late afternoon

Category: Workation, Freelancer/Remote Worker (I do digital systems and design)

I wasn't asked for any additional documentation so I thought I'd share what I submitted:

- Proof of location: US driver's license w/ current address

- Proof of funds: Cover letter explaining what was enclosed and how I intentionally transferred US dollars into a THB account to 'ensure I had easy access to the funds during my stay'; Wise currency account statement in THB

- Proof of employment: Cover letter w/ bullets explaining what was enclosed; I included 4 main areas: *proof of freelance work* (screenshots from my website), *client contract* (my most recent and largest client contract clearly showing that it was for remote work/the contract amount), *recent invoices* (several past and recent invoices shown as paid), *bank statements* (two supporting statements showing the money from a couple of the invoices going from my payment processor into my bank account; I literally highlighted the transaction(s))

I kind of threw everything at the wall to up my chances, but I think the cover letters with the explanations probably prevented this from getting drawn out with questions.

Just to clarify, a lot of people seem to be submitting a copy of their tax returns. You didn’t submit that as part of your package?

So a Wise account is good enough? You don't need a Thai account?

you do not need a Thai bank account for foreign Embassy qualification.

You only need a Thai Bank account for in-country visas and extensions.

I don't have a Thai account. I have a Wise account that has sub-currency accounts.

So the 500,000b isn't too much of a barrier,it's more the employment etc category which will catch people out it seems.

So let me clarify that the bank account that you transferred the funds to was a wise Thai baht account and not an actual Thailand bank account

I applied one week earlier (17th) to the Chicago consulate and still waiting on approval 🙃. At least the status of my application has changed from: “Pending Document Check” to “Pending Approval” but that was like 2-3 business days ago

What determines the consulate that you apply through?

exactly what Zoe said. They specify which states should apply to which consulate on the Thai evisa website

The vast majority of consulates and embassies will allow most passport holders from most countries to apply regardless of where they are from however, *technically in the States when you go to any consulate website they'll outline their jurisdiction which is their way of triaging traffic; They do this for better crisis management, resource management, efficiency, etc. and each consulate will typically have a handful of states in any given geographic region that they'll serve. For example, the NY Consulate-General is responsible for issuing visas for Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Islands, and Vermont.

You would generally want to pick the consulate whose jurisdiction you fall under and *typically by doing so you are often prioritized and things are just generally more efficient. I've found this to be pretty true even with my dealings with the French Consulates in the States too. Of course, bureaucracy is still bureaucracy so it's not always 100% guaranteed it will be quick or easy even when doing so.

Oof. I heard of a couple other people that have been waiting on the Chicago office for at least a week now too. They’re moving real slow over there… Knocking on wood yours gets pushed through asap🫡

Happy to share! There's a thread of replies about this under Jeff Ryan's comment, but basically, you don't need to book the real thing. You can just put in a flight/accom. that you are looking at or get a cheap onward ticket from a site like onwardticket.com (if you're particularly nervous about needing to show proof.)

What did you do regarding your flight information? How do you book a flight, if you don’t know if the Visa will be approved or not?

@Jeff *****
you can also pay for an onward ticket (I use best onward tickets). You can choose a round trip option I believe and it’s only around $12. That’s what I used on my last visa app

There is only a form entry for that now. No more upload required as proof of an existing ticket. Just put in the flight number you are aiming at taking if you get the visa.

random small question: do you get email alerts when something changed on the e-visa site? like your visa approval?

Once I submitted the app. it immediately went into the 'processing' stage so there was no need for any alerts while it was being reviewed. But yes, I did get an automatic transactional/system email once it was approved.

Thank you, Zoe. I’ve been waiting on a NY report as I’m flying out there next week.

Do you know if they accept applications from British passport holders?

Happy to share! From what I understand, they do accept applications from British passport holders— there's usually no problem as long as you satisfy the visa requirements for their jurisdictions. Still, it's best to double-check with them directly just to be sure. Safe travels!
