So it's 2000 baht now to enter Laos, that's 60 USD, with a very unofficial receipt. Probably my last trip there.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the current visa fees for entering Laos, which has risen to 2000 Baht (approximately 60 USD) for many travelers. Participants share mixed experiences with the immigration process, noting issues with unofficial receipts, required full-page visas, and the preference for payment in USD. Some users express frustration over this cost and the overall visa run experience while also comparing it to travel to other ASEAN countries. There are mentions of visa-free entry options for citizens of certain countries and the overall perception of Laos as a travel destination.

Cheap. Costs that just to get Biometric Data recorded for Australia, UK or Europe. Thailand has been issuing biometric passports since 2015

Doesn't the amazing exchange rate with the Laos kip while you are there make up for it; making everything more than dirt cheap: 1GBP =

Laos is one of the most corrupt places on Earth, that money most definitely does not go into infrastructure, it goes into several government officials pockets.
Rob *********
@Jack ******
yeah, fortunately in Thailand these things do not happen 😂
John ***********
@Rob ********
What infrastructure are they spending the money on? Not the roads which have fallen apart the last 5 years since the railway which has robbed the country of its rustic travelling charm has been built. I thought already an extra ten percent tax had been recently applied to accommodation. I'd be deterred by a $60 visa fee too - $80 in Australian money.
Rob *********
@John **********
I am sure your country is cheaper and you will pay less taxes than in the rich country Laos.
John ***********
@Rob ********
I am sure in my country that money paid in fees and taxes filters down the chain far more effectively than in a corrupt country like Laos too. Interesting that Laos has a state of the art high speed railway when mine doesn't but allows the road system, which is far more important for local villagers than the train to deteriorate so badly in just a few years. Like too many developing countries, I doubt very much that the money derived from visas and tourism in general benefits ordinary people not living in the major cities and towns. But you are free to believe that your tourist money directly benefits those people in the country most in need of assistance.assistance.

They take only USD dollars. If you dont have dollars, they ask what ever they want. I gone there thinking i can do exchange in airport, but I couldn't. End up paying 2000 baht too. And their visa takes full page, which means my small passport running out of time quicker. Considering I can't get a new passport in Thailand, it's a very expensive experience. I will never do visa run to Laos. Expensive accommodation too for very low quality private rooms...

Laos is boring AF. Vientianne is shit and nothjing to do or see. I have been there for visa runs and hated the place. I would also not go there if the visa was 60 bucks. It is shit and not worth it. I would think thats what the OP meant

to each his own. I love Laos. The simplicity and people. Each place to me has its pros and cons. I don't come to Laos to do a million things but relax and focus on myself , work and local friends. But that's why we are all different and it's all good. If everyone loved the same things it would be a boring world but to call a place "shit" is a little much. Haha. But your opinion . 🍻

now that I think about it only time I've ever been questioned on entry is when I made a trip to Malaysia just for a few days. It was always cheaper if you paid in dollars; $35 rather than 1500thb. And they never complained at NKP about the quality of the bank notes which I always used to exchange at Bangkok Bank before I went. So now it is $40 is it? An increase of $5 since before COVID is not too bad.
