Can I use the SWIFT code for Bangkok Bank to transfer money from North America?

After a few dead-ends I eventually got a bank account here, but unfortunately without online access. Surprised that's considered an "extra" and Bangkok Bank said I wasn't eligible on a tourist visa. However, a manager gave me the branch's SWIFT code... can I make transfers into this account from North America using that number?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring if they can receive transfers to their Bangkok Bank account using the provided SWIFT code, given that they only have a tourist visa without online access to their bank account. Multiple commenters clarify that yes, international transfers can be made to the account using the SWIFT code assigned to the bank, but emphasize that online banking access may be limited on a tourist visa, particularly concerning outbound international transactions. Alternatives like TransferWise (now Wise) for transferring money from North America are recommended, as they often provide better rates and fees compared to traditional banks.

Bangkok Bank recently opened on TR Tourist Visa. Full online and mobile banking account. When offered UnionPay, I asked for MasterCard or Visa (MasterCard they had alternatively). In Thailand unfortunately one annoying things occurs everywhere ... be it immigration or banking ... you go to different offices or talk to different people of the very same organization and get vastly different results. That sucks but is was it is. Just go shopping for favorable conditions across different branches / offices.
Frank-Steven ***********
Oh yes: Despite passport, I needed a Residence Certificate - obtainable at the immigration office against coffee money.

I opened my BKK savings account and can do everything online. Came with ATM M/C card (for 200 per year). This was 4 years ago... but you can still get the same. I am on retirement Visa and never had to do Swift code or Wise... do everything via BKK bank here and in NYC branch. I have no idea why some have such issues and problems.

I took my Thai gf, my passport, and $100 US to the Bangkok branch in EmQuartier, and sat there while my gf did all the talking. All I said was "I want the BTS rabbit debit card."

I basically got tired of using my home debit card/credit card in bank machines, and the girl could tell I am in Thailand several times a year. It was a straight forward process.

Does your US bank do Cash Advances with your debit card? Mine does and thereā€™s no fee so thatā€™s how I usually withdraw/ exchange while in country. Bangkok Bank didnā€™t charge me any fees for this either. In my experience this was by far the best exchange rate as well. I canā€™t remember if there was a limit and what it was though. Worth asking both sides about. Itā€™s called a ā€œDebit Cash Advanceā€.

Hereā€™s someone elseā€™s description that goes into more detail as well:

Transferwise doesn't give you best results.
Ivan ************
@Jos***
you should open an account with them, you get a better rate and no incoming ACH fee then. Better than your other link below.
Joseph *****
@Ivan ***********
I use mobile app and have account. Is there a different ?
Ivan ************
@Jos***
you need to open their multi-currency account that lets you keep money in it. This is a separate thing to just having an account with them. Particularly for the US transfers this works out cheaper as they both give you a slightly better rate but the larger factor is you get US bank details with the account and you can ACH to them free from your existing US bank.

*******************************************
Joseph *****
@Ivan ***********
if I understand correctly, you have to add $ to the account first before transfer. That's avoid the ACH fee ?
Ivan ************
@Jos***
yes, you transfer USD using ACH to the personal bank details for account, that then appears in your Wise account, no fees. You can then do the transfer on to Thailand. No Wise-side ACH fee like you do if you do the transfer direct from your US bank.

Yes, I suggest you use a fund transfer company like OFX rather than bank to bank direct transfers. My experience is that you get MUCH much better rates than the banks offer and the service is quick, efficient, easy to use and safe. ask around about the best companies to suit your purpose... I transfer OZ dollar to Thai Baht.

Indeed, without a work permit, one cannot have e-banking on a PC. However, if you have a Thai phone number, you register the numbre at your BKB branch, dowload the BKB Apps and you can access your account via the Apps. In the meantime, you can transfer monney from anywhere in the world via the SWIFT into your BKB account.
Ivan ************
@Da**
you can have Bangkok Bank internet banking on a PC without a work permit. The one thing you can't have is the ability to do international outward transfers from it. Everything else works.

I have k-bank and it has been great actually. I love transferring money to pay for things in Thailand with the phone app/qr code. The visa you have does make it harder to get a bank account.. like people said, it varies from branch to branch

I spend 4-5 months a year in Thailand (2 trips), intended to open an account this trip but have come to the conclusion there is really no benefit. I brought enough cash for first month and then when I need more I just do a TW transfer into my GFs account, she then withdraws cash as I need it. Having my own account is really no extra benefit. Also I believe most banks charge an annual fee for ATM access. For me I'd only do about 4-5 WDs a year so not worth the 200THB fee.

Craig Beggs. It's useful if you have a longstay visa

agreed, but I've decided theres no advantage getting a long stay visa because the longest stretch for me in Thailand is 4 months and so TR visas are all that I need

Inion Pay I think was ploy for Chinese Co to replace MC or Visa.

They stopped reissuing Visa and said only Union. Said close all 4 accounts, a MC suddenly appeared.
Dana *******
@Niclas **********
With your ATM debit card, you can withdraw up to 50'000 THB a day in any ATM aoutside Thailand that carries the symbol Union Pay. Only 100 THB fees per withdrawal.
Ivan ************
@Da**
the fee is quite a bit higher than that, it's 100B+2.5%. This is standard with most Thai bank cards, I suspect it may be a limit set by the Bank of Thailand but most cards stick to this. The Bankgok Bank UnionPay card is 100B+2.5%, but so are the other Bangkok Bank cards, they are the same.

. Moreso saving face. They'd prefer to deny it exists rather than admit they don't know how to do it for you. I've experienced exactly this when I set up internet banking with Kbank.

1. Called them and they told me to go to branch to activate it.

2. Went to branch and was told 3 times by tellers that it wasn't possible.

3. a supervisor walked past and overheard the conversation.

4. 5 minutes later I had internet banking done by supervisor on my own mobile phone, after she made one call to the internet dept 10 meters from where we were standing inside the bank...

Ivan ************
I'd stick in a plug for Wise (formerly TransferWise) here, it is a very good way to make these transfers. Open an account with them to get a better rate. You can transfer in domestically (ACH in the US) and then send it to Thailand. From the US they give you the spot forex rate + 0.55% and a fixed fee of $1.05 (if you have an account). From Canada, it's $0.95+0.75%.
Ivan ************
@Jo***
you can use TW for immigration, need to select "funds for long stay in Thailand". Used to be the case that bank transfer was cheaper for larger amounts for many countries/banks but this is not common now since TW have dropped their rates, it is still true for some regional currencies like MYR but Bangkok Bank forex % for major currencies like USD or EUR is now higher than TW.

What currency are you sending and what fees? Are you converting into THB with your home bank? It's possible, with some very specific circumstances. But very rare.
Jonas *************
It was cheaper to use my bank than transwferwise would have been, especially for larger amounts, as the fee was fixed. And it was the Google lisred rate.

If you need to prove funds for interesting you need plain simple wire transfer from bank.

I'm sure transwferwise is perfect for smaller amounts. And nasty banks that do tricks or have foreign fees.
Ivan ************
@Jo***
to take the example of SEK- 250k with Wise gets you 906,025B. Bangkok Bank's current TT rate for SEK is 3.
*****
. So converting to THB, that's 900,625 - 500B Thai-side wire receive fee = 900,125. So you get 5,900B more with Wise, even if the Swedish bank charges nothing at all.

Now it's possible that your home bank has some arrangement where they do the conversion into THB cheaper. But this is very unusual if so.

It was the case, a year or two ago, that what you say was true for many currencies, for larger amounts a direct bank transfer WAS better. But I would check again for your situation, as Wise have significantly reduced their rates.

You can get both internet and mobile banking from Bangkok Bank on a tourist visa. Try another branch if you want it.

Online access won't facilitate your making transfers FROM N America anyway though, you can't do that from within the Thai online banking, that's something you'd need to do from your N American bank. Yes, the SWIFT code (plus your account number) is what you need for that.

Ivan ************
@Gre****
to be specific, there is a specific restriction on the Bangkok Bank online banking if you get it on a tourist visa, namely that you can't make international outward transactions with it (need to do on paper at a branch). But that's as far as I'm aware the only restriction, and they can configure the online banking so it lets you do *everything else* (domestic transfers, bill pay, top-ups, payments, etc) just without the international banking. It's a flag when they set up the account. So if you press, you may be able to get it.

- just to let you know I also use Wise.

It's brilliant has up to the minute live market rates.

What I do is set up a transfer having checked the rates...I then take it if I think it will go down on the day...I check how long they are guaranteeing the rate and I select the option 'make bank transfer later'....if rate goes up within the time frame I take another at the point of wanting to complete and cancel the earlier one...this gives me basically more money especially if the transfer is a fair bit.

If you do it this way its the cheapest in terms of their fees. So to be clear it is set it up but use I'll transfer it later and when you are ready to complete you transfer from your bank account into Wise account...its that simple.

I also have a BKK account and intend to look into other options when I return but tbh if you take the cash out you need for the day it's not a problem apart from security...this is why I will try and get an app/online option when I return šŸ‘šŸ¼
