What should I arrange in Thailand while marrying a Thai citizen as a tourist to prepare for future visits?

Advice, please! If I will be in Thailand soon as a tourist, marrying a Thai citizen while there, but then leaving Thailand (at least for now), what will I later WISH that I'd done/arranged/filed for/etc. while there, in case I ever do decide to return for a longer time later? Should I try to set up a bank account while there? Apply for a certain form that can't be obtained from outside the country? Again, our current plans are not to live there but I want to think ahead and maximize the value of my time there.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around what arrangements a tourist marrying a Thai citizen in Thailand should make for potential future long-term stays. Key points include the recommendation to open a Thai bank account (though experiences vary by bank), obtaining essential documentation like a rose-bordered wedding certificate, and being aware of possible financial obligations towards the spouse's family. Additionally, discussions touch on safety concerns regarding crime, scams, and cultural differences for foreigners in Thailand.

Personally and reading the replies,you don’t seem to have outlined how you met if you’ve never been to Thailand, obviously there are reasons why you are marrying here, I take it her family have had some input etc and how long have you been together and where will you be living might clarify some people’s thoughts and reply differently, at least perhaps with more sensitivity, instead of saying just don’t do it, one of my best friends married a Thai in Thailand, I was his best man in 2008, they live in England and have 2 children together, couldn’t be happier so it can work..all the best...

as you say most are beautiful. Most are attracted to western men for either their ways of treating women or unfortunately their wallets. Depends on what walk of life you or they are on. If you met your ideal bride as the PA of an executive of a Thai blue chip company then so be it. If you met her in a bar in Soi Somewhere and she claims that you’re “the one” expect different results. “The one” may turn out to be 30 and all are expected to help with family matters like buffalo dying or a sister needing hospital bills paid.

For what it's worth, I've made it abundantly clear to my lovely bride-to-be that I am not wealthy, that she will still need to work and contribute, and that we may not have an "easy" life. She has reiterated to me that she accepts all of that. Guided by a book, we've discussed 101 questions that couples should discuss BEFORE getting married. We have our differences, as any two people do, but see eye-to-eye on the big issues. And I've always been a believer that it's "better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." Going into this with a hopeful but realistic, not idealistic, mindset. Wish me luck. 😎

Despite the nonsense you may read in this group.

I came to Thailand 6 years ago and I have had no interest in leaving. Its a great place with many things to offer all types of people.

Many expat have long happy marriages. Several have short live miserable marriages. Marriage is what you make of it ( I wouldnt really know)

So right. I'm just feeling sorry for all these guys who think that the lady they're dating is crazy in love with them. I have two Thai friends, female, here in northern Germany. Both are well educated, but still say they'd marry anyone who's willing to take care of them and their family, pay for their visa, and so on. One of them will soon marry a guy who would never get a woman under normal circumstances. But he thinks it's big love... I really don't know what's wrong with guys. They seem to think no matter how ugly or poor they are, one day the proverbial 'supermodel' (usually from a poor part of the world) will knock on their door, begging them to marry them... Please, guys, do take a look in the mirrow and consider that there's girls out there who'll do anything for a visa....

I'll be in the city for most of my time there. Given its size I expect to exercise a degree of caution similar to what I might in NYC, Chicago, etc. But outside of Bangkok it certainly sounds very laid-back and relaxed!
Stuart *********
@Gregory ********
even in the city you’d rarely find any sort of issues you might experience in a US city. Girls walk home by themselves without fear of being mugged, kids walk to school or get public transport by themselves. Sure if you’re in a seedy bar area you’d best keep you’re wits about you but 99% of the time the people who could trouble you won’t bother because you’re a foreigner and the fallout from that is way worse than hassling a Thai. Of course it happens, like anywhere in the world but in a percentage wise I’m guessing maybe 1 or 2%.
Greg *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Stuart ********
That certainly sounds a lot less terrifying than this blog made it out to be. I was half-expecting to have a target 🎯 on my back the entire time and that every Thai passerby, cop, government official, business owner, and monk were all conspiring to rob, extort, or imprison me!
Stuart *********
@Gregory ********
not sure what blog?, but probably not someone that’s experienced Thai living for real. Probably read something on the internet somewhere and assumed it would be like any western city of mugging, murder, et al. Crime happens but as a foreigner you’ll almost certainly never see it. Of course there are cases of a policeman extorting, or a mugging or worse but if you’re “Mr Joe Average” it won’t involve you.
Greg *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Stuart ********
This isn't the exact blog (I can't find it now) but is similar. Comments ranged from warnings about fake cops to predatory airport officials to relatives disappearing...

***************************************************
Stuart *********
@Gregory ********
I’m not suggesting that these sort of scams can’t happen. I’m sure they do. But it’s not real life here in the land of smiles. 99.99% of tourists or longer stay residents won’t see or experience anything like this. If you are caught up in a airport “scam” you’ve been targeted way before you’ve got to the airport by either corrupt staff at your departure end or just fit the “degenerate” profile that could be targeted here. “Mr & Mrs Joe Average“ travelling with their 2.1 kids would never experience this. There’s corruption all over the world. There’s certainly some here. You or I probably won’t come across it or be bothered by it - it’s not in our sphere.

if the bikes were stolen and you filed a police report you’d almost certainly find that they “turned up” in a few days. Thai culture overrides many of the western way of thinking and what acts young people -who are the most apt to do something stupid-do.

asking foreigners who live outside of Bangkok and you’ll probably find many leave keys in cars, bikes, leave bags in open view while shopping, even leave their front door unlocked most if not all the time. It’s just not a thing here that people fret about as it so rarely happens. Possibly in Bangkok or other cities it might be different. If you get involved in the bar scene, bar girls then that’s another story and if you are susceptible to being fleeced you probably will be. Not the case for the average foreigner.

Corrupt cops - $3.00 to $30.00 dollars. If they ask for more than $30.00 fight the charge.

Both airports have regulated taxis of sorts - very easy to avoid bad elements. Much safer here than in Manila.

There maybe thieves here in Thailand but they are so easy to find. You and your belongs will be safe. I am forever leaving my keys in my motorcycle. Given 45 on arrival and can renew for another 30 days, the problem is you have to have 40,000 baht in the bank for 60 to obtain a marriage visa

once you are married you can then apply for the “visiting Thai family “ extension which would give you a further 60 days. Time for your funds to season.

like anywhere these things occur, but in practice it’s probably a fraction of the time that would happen in your home country. If you abide by the rules and don’t drive without licence/helmet/insurance you probably won’t encounter it. If you stick within the immigration rules you generally would never be worried about deportation.
Stuart *********
Theft happens, but is incredibly rare. Many people who are here long term are used to leaving their car running or unlocked while popping in to a shop and would never even think their car would be stolen or contents taken. Sure it happens, but very rare.

Terary **********
No - That's only in the western world. My bank does online banking but to perform some/many operations I need to do the Two-Factor-Authentication. They send me a text I enter it in the computer. Thats usually for transferring funds to other banks or creating third party accounts. Hence, I need to be in Thailand with my Thailand bank account, and my Thailand phone.

Recently I had to replace my cash-card, I had to do it in person.

My cash card not be used online - although that might be a security feature.

If you are in the USA (maybe North America eg: USA + Canada + Mexico) - you will do well get google voice number. That would be for more long term live in Thailand but it won't hurt to start using that number.

Also if you are in the US. It may do well to find a permanent address in Thailand. You can say you live and your wive's mother's house, for the short term. Having evidence residence maybe helpful.

take away

Get Thai phone/sim (you'll need international phone if from North America)

Get Thai residence - mail sent to you in Thailand just for fun

Get Google Voice Number

Get Thai Bank account

Here in Thailand there is now Twizzlers - I would appreciate you greatly if you brought me some.
