Landed yesterday, on a one-way for you haterz. No hotel reservations either 😂😂😂Must be my friendly face, IO smiled at me, stamp stamp for 60!

Grab is so awesome, the Goose cost me a pretty penny, but oh so worth it.

Best recommendation for a visa agent in Bangkok? Over 50 and DTV both available for me. Wanna get it done upfront so I’m not pressed for time at the end of my tourist. Also I can then start traveling and playing

TLDR : Answer Summary
A recent expat shared their experiences after arriving in Thailand without a hotel reservation or return ticket, which led to various comments about their immigration experience and advice on visa options. Several users recommended reliable visa agents in Bangkok, particularly the Thai Visa Centre and MyThaiVisa, for those looking to apply for a retirement visa or a DTV visa. The conversation also highlighted the importance of being prepared with documentation regarding return tickets, especially with changing airline regulations. Some users mentioned their own experiences with immigration officers, noting that while questions about return travel can vary, they are increasingly common.

i have lived/traveled to thailand for 17yrs. spending some time in PI new (just some).

most of the "savvy" visa services are in pattaya hence the number of old farangs there. of course, some elsewhere phuket, hua hin.

this is in pattaya. i assume they can do visa stuff internet only. good crew typical pretty (competent) thai girls in office and western owner.

for me i got my visa in 2015 and used my US pension letter (county pension) needed few other documents. my understanding is that pension letters are really not accepted anymore only to get/fund a thai bank account.

If you plan to retire and not work, you will need the O Visa, or the OA visa. If you're over 50, and have the required amounts of money, they will work best for you. If you are planning on working, even part time, then the DTV Visa will work well. Compare all the visas and choose wisely. They each come with their own pros and cons.

Your experience is not unusual. Basically, it’s up to the Immigration Agent if you breeze through or have show a return ticket and where you are staying - but it’s very rare. Enjoy I’ll arrive there in 2 more weeks for 90 days for the 27th time.
Lawrence *********
Just go to the immigration department and speak to them in person. Chang Wattana. Doest take long but it's a hike unless you taxi. Never do any taxi but on the meter unless you have to.
JP *******
Go to Pattaya and find an agent. Easier and maybe a few bucks cheaper.

Welcome to Thailand.

Welcome man. The only thing I'd suggest is watch taking pics of alcohol products. They aren't keen on that. Enjoy your stay!

Can you go from tourist visa to retirement or DTV whilst in the country. You may well have already fuked up, may need to go to nearest consulate outside of Thailand. Vientiene is good and a very worthwhile trip, you can fly to Udon get bus to border. You would need to stay in Vientiene for a night or 2, longer if on a weekend. But a very enjoyable experience.

Wow, the haters really came out of the woodwork today, you even got one who feels superior by dint of marriage. On the bright side, there are tons of normal people in Bangkok too, I'm sure you'll love it!

Agents: Thai Visa Expert and Thai Visa Centre. Your surest bet is the Retirement Extension. Should set you back in the neighborhood of a grand. You can read lots of anecdotes about the DTV on this forum, that's better bang for the buck if you don't mind the uncertainty of the different rules everywhere and you have time to set it up.

Don't forget to get yourself long-term health insurance once you have your long-stay visa. I used AA Insurance Brokers and would recommend them, of course there are others too.

Good luck, and welcome to Bangkok!

You can’t apply for a DTV in Thailand you can apply for the non- o based on retirement sounds like you don’t have 800k in a Thai bank so you’ll have to pay and agent I’ve heard some agents will walk you through the DTV taking you on a visa run for about 160k baht

Its not the Thai immigration who insist on a return ticket , its some airlines refuse to let you board the flight because of no return flight . As you have such an unpleasant attitude , I will not be helping you
Alli *******
@Peter *****
Thailand gov require a flight out of the country ( return flight) you cannot board the plane to enter or you will be refused. It may depend on your country but that’s the case for Australia to Thailand.
Heather *******
@Alli ******
we only ever have a one way flight never had a problem
John *********
@Alli ******
This is not the case…well it can be but i have flown in more than 20 times and never been asked about onward travel👍
Lawrence *********
@John ********
You're absolutely mistaken.They might not have asked for it but it is a legal requirement To show outbound travel reservations before the expiration of your visa on arrival in customs in thailand so take your chances and then they send you to a room until you go home in the airport. Thanks , I'll pay fifteen or twenty bucks and buy the onward ticket.
John *********
@Lawrence ********
yep i already know its a legal requirement so i am not mistaken,i just never bothered buying an onward ticket and like i say i have never been chalenged👍
Lawrence *********
@John ********
I went in and out you know, 8 times that's 16 altogether in 18 months and no one ever asked me for an outgoing ticket either.Except if you apply for the ninety day visa when you're out of the country at a thai embassy then they do ask for it. Always. So I'm in Bangkok, 60 to 90 days. I gotta go to a Visa run if I want to just come back and get a 30 day Visa on arrival. Yeah, they don't ask, but if you want to waste your time if you know you're staying longer like I was you wanna get the 60 day and that's at the Thai embassy in whatever country you' are I was in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Vientiane and Shanghai... and then you've gotta show an. Outbound tick.. Guarantee you.
Lawrence *********
However, the advice I would give to friends is not to do what you're doing.
Lawrence *********
@John ********
Congratulations
Peter ******
@John ********
Did you have a one way ticket ? The airlines can see whether you have a return flight or not, they don't need to ask
John *********
@Peter *****
one way always,never once bothered me,lucky me lol
Peter ******
@John ********
Which airlines have you used ?
Lawrence *********
@Alli ******
You can buy a fake ticket for return for ten or twenty dollars. It's actually a real plane ticket, but you just pay the company to rent it for 48 to 70 2:00 until you get into the country.And then it's up to you.You do what you want to do?Maybe you want to go to Singapore or maybe you want to go to Laos or Cambodia or Vietnam for a visit?Go see anchor watt , you don't have to let them pin you down.
Ken *********
@Lawrence ********
What is the name of the company ?
Lawrence *********
@Ken ********
Maybe google go forward and if there's nothing there under that name , just google rent a temporary plane ticket and it should come up. Here's a thing... It's a real plane ticket, so you're not doing anything illegal. Costumes won't stop you.They can't unless you show up drunk like a backpacker with no money and a bad attitude.
Lawrence *********
Go forward maybe
Lawrence *********
@Ken ********
I have to look it up.It's been a while but I was just back in Bangkok.A couple months ago I lived there for 2 years.And so that's how I know about this when I would do.My visa runs

Don't believe half of what you read on here regarding IO. They've always been more than polite to me and I've never been interrogated over onward travel or accommodation.
Patrick ************
@Jacob ****
same same
Ken ********
@Jacob ****
it's not immigration who are concerned about onward travel, its the airline you fly with. If you get refused entry, they are responsible for you.
Brian **********
@Ken *******
correct. The current fine imposed on carriers for allowing no return or onward travel to Thailand is US$
*****
.
Ken ********
@Brian *********
that's some fine Brian.
Kev **********
@Ken *******
they where very concerned about it when I landed here last month mate she gave me a grilling 😳 first time ever
Ken ********
@Kev *********
KLM, Humberside airport, questioned me about my single flight. I showed them my visa and then it was ok.

Its the airline's responsibility if you get refused entry, to take you back.
Kev **********
@Ken *******
yes mate correct but it’s also upto the immigration officer it’s the first time I’ve ever been questioned entering Thailand (I entered visa exempt)
Ken ********
@Kev *********
it is the immigration who will refuse your entry, then , the airline, whom brought you, is responsible for your return. Hence why they should check , if you have a single ticket, so they dont have to repatriate you.
Kev **********
@Ken *******
they are clamping down at survanabhumi mate they are getting strict
Ken ********
@Kev *********
yep, they have lots of reasons to stop entry. Im sure this will make the airlines stricter on people boarding with single tickets.

I also heard, they can refuse entry if you dont have 20k baht or equivalent in any currency .
Kev **********
@Ken *******
yea mate it’s upto the airline to

Check but it’s also on the immigration officer they can refuse entry without visa or return flight within 60 days
Michael ********
@Jacob ****
its rarely the IO its the airlines asking for tickets, its on the IATA guidelines for Thailand. More so since covid as airlines can be liable if person has not shown an onward ticket
Duncanc **********
@Michael *******
correct!

(although this liability predates Covid)
Michael ********
@Duncanc *********
Yes was before covid but i travel a lot and normally on one way tickets (seamans) and have noticed a big difference since covid. Before covid guess was asked about 5 % of time i reckon i get asked over 50 % of times now
Duncanc **********
@Michael *******
UK border force has increased the training they give to airline/airport staff

It really does depend which airline and which airport - but as you say it’s increasing. Assume it’s the rule - which it is!
Ralph *******
@Jacob ****
Me too. Travelled here maybe 20 times in the last 9 years and never been interrogated. But, on my last 3 trips the airline has asked for proof of onward travel.
