Best place is on one of the New Year dinner cruises. At midnight all the boats stop at the optimum location to get the best view of fireworks from Icon Siam in one direction, and Asiatique in the other.

No, I've done a couple, and you're right it's typical buffet food. The trade off is you get a fantastic view of the fireworks. It's personal preference what it is you're looking for
