TLDR : Answer Summary
The post celebrates the approval of a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand, allowing for a stay of up to five years. While the visa is valid for five years, each entry allows for a stay of 180 days, with an option to extend once per entry for an additional 180 days. There's a significant emphasis on the necessity of maintaining a specific bank balance and fulfilling tax obligations while living in Thailand. The community engagement includes congratulations, inquiries about the application process, documentation requirements, and discussions regarding tax implications and living arrangements in Thailand.

Regarding the DTV visa . I read that the 500 k doesn't have to be in a Thai bank can be in your home bank ac. But this could be wrong, I suspect. Also anyone know of cookery and/or Language classes? Bangkok or Chiang Mai
Andi ***********
Dave Robinson The 500k can be in your home bank. Many posts of success confirm this.

Once you get your visa, you will usually receive a small paper to inform you about reporting for 90 days stay in the Kingdom. You can do it online. Bangkok immigration link only allows 15 days before the reporting date. Some provincial immigration offices can be done in few days before the reporting date. You will have. 7 days grace period after the reporting date which you have to do onsite.

The DTV visa allows stays of up to 180 days with a visa issuance fee of ฿9,349 to ฿40,194 baht, valid for five years. DTV holders can extend their stay once per entry stamp for an additional 180 days with another 1,900 baht fee and may request to change the type of visa within the country.
Mark *******
Excellent! Just make sure you do your 90 days reporting - there has been some confusion about people thinking you don’t need to do it on DTV, but you do.
Tammy ********
@Mark ******
could you put a link from an official website where it explains this 90 day reporting as I have searched Google and cannot find anything about this from the thai embassy. It only states 180 day stamp needed to extend for the next 180 days. Thankyou 🙏

Michael ********
Scott Cassio For over 50, and a large passive income, yes.
Steven *********
Scott Cassio you do realise this is a DTV group you're in .. and if so why worry and discuss a different visa when the lady already has this one ??
Scott ********
Steven Cameron Yep, I realize. But typing the visa name isn’t discussing it. And if you didn’t notice there was a lot of angst about Thai taxes and the LTR visa might solve that problem. Make sense?
Steven *********
Scott Cassio as far as I've read there is still no real clarity around all the taxes and what is going to happen. A lot of speculation but that's it.

As for the name of the group , it is a DTV group and the lady was happy to get the DTV visa , it could be for several reasons... So commenting about tax on this particular post doesn't make sense .
Giovanni ****************
Scott Cassio yop…
Steve ******
What do you need to get a DTV ??
Andi ***********
Steve Wato Basically 3 options online work with a non-Thai firm, medical treatment or cultural activity e.g. Muay Thai, cooking etc.
Jason ************
@An**
so how do you prove a cultural activity like cooking ?
Andi ***********
Jason Kuliopulos Provide the course info, school license/registration, payment of course etc. and submit with your dtv application.
Oliver **********
The biggest drawback of this Visa is that it is still classed as a Tourist Visa. That means you can't legally open a bank account. You can't get a residency certificate so you can't buy a car or motorbike. You can't get a Drivers license. Before you jump down my throat, note I said "legally".
**
Oliver Buchmann I don't see the point of lamenting about 'legal' when the alternative works just fine. 😬
Souk *****************
Oliver Buchmann yes you are right, a tourist in Thailand with no reasons, excepts you are legally registered with a law firm (somehow) could open a bank account. But it does not allow you to work anyway,
Denis **********
you are (partially) correct only on case of opening bank account, on DTV it is hard, yes, but not impossible.

residence, driving licence, buying car/motorbike - there is no problems even with normal, 60+30 day, tourist Visa
Irina ****
Oliver Buchmannyou can get a driving license even under a free stamp 90 days as well as a residence certificate and buy/sell a transport
Mick *******
Oliver Buchmann you can get a 2yr drivers licence
Steven *********
Oliver Buchmann I opened a bank account no problem... And also no problem getting my residence certificate...all done legally with correct documents, oh I also got my driving licence.. so I have no idea what information you are getting
Philip ********
Steven Cameron you're still an alien here and always will be, they let you know that often.
Steven *********
Philip Grills yes because I was born in the UK, and I'll always be British. I have no problem with that and I am happy for my visa and the time I have in Thailand.. . I don't expect to have the same rights as a local.
Philip ********
Steven Cameron me the same but alien is discriminating. were not from another planet.
Mo ******
Philip Grills for many is us it’s not a problem to be an alien. I don’t want to have the Thai citizenship. I am good with mine.
Mari ********************
Philip Grills 🤣 I feel you. With work permit working for 20 years and still an alien 👽
Steven *********
Philip Grills I like their honesty about it and we know clearly where we stand ... Other countries try to make it look like we are welcome and shaft us harder ...so I am at peace with how the Thais treat us ...and to be fair we are absolutely shafting them with the way prices are rising due to the rise in foreigners and demands they are making in the markets . It's getting harder and harder for locals to make money.
Oliver **********
Steven Cameron It's a tourist visa. I have no doubt you got what you say you did. Anything is possible.
Steven *********
Oliver Buchmann I have no reason to lie or waste my time making stuff up in a group .. all achieved very easily with the visa whatever way you want to look at it.
Mark ***********
Steven Cameron which branch of which bank , was turned down at three banks in Sukhumvit area 😏
Steven *********
Mark Fairbairn Samui mate , I heard that every branch has their own things they like or don't like ..

If you ask about an insurance policy (about 800 Baht) that helps 😉

You cannot stay on that Visa for 5 Years.

You can stay 180 Days per Year and I believe 1x you can Extend by another 180 Days. So you will need to leave Thailand in between long Visits for 180 Days or so.

That's what I understand this Visa is providing. Happy to learn if that is not true.
Michael ********
โทมัส ทอม เฟรย์ You can stay in Thailand for 360 days at a time, cross a border and come back, and stay for another 360. You can keep doing this until the end of the visa.
โทมัส ************
Michael Lucken Okay. Then this is indeed a Visa that allows you to live here.

Thank you for the clarification.

Irina Lu

1900 B
Lloyd ******
Stauffer On Tour 1900? That's about 60 bucks?
Graham *******
I think there is some confusion here. The DTV does not allow you to stay in Thailand for 5 years. It is valid for 5 years there is a difference. You can stay for 180 days per entry and can extend it once for a total of 360 days within that 5 year period.
Jirka ********
Graham Lynch With always extension is 5 years staying :))))
Pearl *******
Graham Lynch how can I app
Michael ********
Graham Lynch Correct. This visa can't be used to stay in Thailand for 5 years straight, without leaving the country after 360 days.
Mark *******
Graham Lynch correct, there is some confusion here, but you are the one confused. Multi entry visa, valid for 5 years, 180 days per entry. You can exit and enter Thailand every 180 days and get a new fresh 180 days for 5 years, as many times as you like.
KhunKroo *********
@Jack **********
might be useful to know.
Ottone *********
Graham Lynch you write 180days per entry and it's a multi entry visa so.........
Ryder ***********
Graham Lynch it is extendable for an extra 180 days everytime you re-enter Thailand, not just 1 time in 5 years
Steve ********
Ryder Eggleston what he meant is that you can extend it for another 180 days at the immigration without leaving the country.
James ********
Graham Lynch WRONG about that...you can get a NEW 180 day stamp Each time you enter Thailand during the 5 year DTV VISA.
William ********
Graham Lynch Yes, but as of now, to my understanding, there is no limit on the number of times you can re-enter Thailand during the 5-year period. So as long as you leave every 180 days, you essentially can stay in Thailand for 5 years, with a few border runs thrown in.
James ********
@William *******
Correct ✅
Kim **********
@James *******
border runs usually how long it takes to return to Thailand?
James ********
@Kim *********
if you use an experienced border run service company to take you to the Thai border, cross and bounce back on the same day. But why the rush?
Mari ********************
@Kim *********
Only a day to do border runs. You can either stay a night at the border country or just make a swing at the border.

Dean Russell no, only y have work permit
Andi ***********
Dean Russell Doubt you can live for 5 years on visa exemption working online. Could do for several months but not for years. Better to work legally long term for 10, 000 THB. than risk long term ban/fine. 10, 000 THB over 5 years is CHEAP.
Dean *********
Irmgard Wuschick so it’s only to live there but cannot work ?
Andi ***********
Dean Russell You can work online only with the DTV. Remote work for non Thai businesses.

Maybe those clearly living a tax free life as digital nomads will be swept up in the Thai tax net as most want to stay more than 180 days a financial year. Different for soft power DTV holders if not making money here or OS plus taxed outside Thailand.

unless one of 61 DTA countries you won’t be taxed twice

*************************************
โทมัส ************
@Scott **********
Of course you get taxed twice. You probably meant to say that you can get a Tax Credit on the Tax already paid in the other Country.

You still will need to file a Tax Return in Thailand and declare your assessable Income.

Filing a Tax Return does not automatically mean you need to pay Tax in Thailand. That is what the Tax Return is for....to find out if you owe Tax in Thailand or not.
Ibra *********
โทมัส ทอม เฟรย์ exactly 🙏🏽 Thank you!
Andi ***********
@Michael ********
You do not have to file a tax return if you stay under 6 months. If you do file, tax can be reduced via business expenses and dual tax regulations, The first filing for many if they have to would be 2026.

correct. Only over 179+ days. Must file Thai tax return regardless of income sources or face heavy fine on amount assessed and or up to 7 years in Thai prison.

maybe. Maybe not. There are plenty of variables that apply where one wouldn’t have to file or owe taxes, file and not owe, or file and owe taxes. It all depends on a couple of things 😃 #TheDetailsMatter

Ibra *********
@Urs *******
depends on what country you’re from and who is paying out the pension. If you’re from the USA and your pension is from an US government agency or department, the Thai government has an exemption for that. They don’t tax government pensions.
Jakob *********
@Ibra ********
wrong, you only don't pay tax here if your country already taxed you, if not, you will pay tax here, regardless from which country you from...direct information from the Thai tax office
Sebastien ****
@Ibra ********
they do since new rule is in place

, starting next year.
Urs ********
Sebastien Pi It's actually not a new rule. It just wasn't enforced so far. All foreigners who stay in the Kingdom for more than 180 days in a calendar year will have to pay taxes for their income, including pensions, for the year 2024. No exceptions for Americans.
Jakob *********
@Urs *******
exactly 💯
Ibra *********
@Urs *******
correct. one would have to ‘file’ Thai tax documents. How much one would pay or not pay depends on the tax strategy, structure/type of income, and DTA. One can file and not pay depending on their tax strategy 😃 #DetailsMatter
Ibra *********
@Urs *******
Article 21 of the US-Thailand Tax Treaty states otherwise (along with several Thai tax attorneys). One would have to be a ‘tax resident’ of Thailand to be taxed on a USG pension in Thailand #DetailsMatter

If you stay in Thailand for more than 180 days a calendar year, you're a tax resident. Is that so difficult to understand?

There is no income requirement for the DTV - there is a capital requirement of 500k THB for the visa. You can have a comfortable life in Thailand for 3k USD in the vast majority of places and lifestyles unless you are going to Hi-So 600 THB a cocktail bars each night :-)

That's sufficient. There's no specific minimum salary required, but anything from around USD 800 and above seems to be fine. The most important thing is the 500,000 THB in your account though.
