this is not true? by air you have unlimited entries without limit. I think the limit is now relaxed for land border rule too - previously was 5?.

180 day is a universal rule, where you're considered resident if you stay for more than 180 days and are technically tax liable, IF you are bringing income into the country [aka moving money to thai bank account]
