What are the requirements and challenges for extending a DTV visa in Thailand, and is a border run a better option?

Jan 13, 2025
5 days ago
I currently hold a DTV visa, and my stamp is valid until the 19th of January. I’ve already been in Thailand for almost six months.

A couple of days ago, I visited Immigration Division 1. I had received an email from them with a list of documents I needed to submit, and I ensured I had everything prepared. However, upon speaking with them, it turned out that my paperwork wasn’t sufficient. I had submitted proof of 500,000 baht across various bank accounts, but the superintendent also required a screenshot of... producing the statement. Additionally, they asked for a letter explaining my work and income since my arrival, as well as my future plans.

As they explained, I was the first person with a DTV visa to request an extension, and it seemed they were still trying to figure out the process themselves.

Today, I returned with the additional documents they requested, but it still wasn’t enough. Now, they are asking for bank statements for each account covering the last 30 days, and they plan to use the lowest balance in each statement to calculate the total sum of 500,000 baht.

On top of that, I was informed that I should have reported to “Counter A” after staying in Thailand for 90 days. And Because I didn’t, there’s now a fine of 2,000 baht. Stupid of me, but I didn’t happen to hear about this requirement.

The staff mentioned they are waiting for further instructions by Friday and I would need to check back with them by that day.

However, I’m starting to feel concerned. What if I submit everything again and it still isn’t enough? So now, I’m considering doing a border run, possibly tomorrow. From what I’ve been told, re-entering the country would automatically grant me another 180 days, avoiding all the complications with the extension process.

The officer I dealt with was polite and genuinely seemed to want to help, but it was clear they were uncertain about the requirements themselves and therefore they were being cautious and kind of… creative.

I thought I’d share my experience here, as it might be helpful to others in a similar situation.

If anyone has advice about the border run, I’d appreciate it. I’m about to look now into the cheapest destinations for a quick trip. I’m thinking of even staying for two nights wherever I go and maybe make something nice out of this experience.

Any recommendations or insights would be greatly appreciated!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster described their experience in seeking an extension for their DTV visa in Thailand, which involves meeting specific financial and documentation requirements. They faced difficulties with the immigration office regarding the submission of bank proofs and were fined for failing to complete a mandatory 90-day report. Frustrated with the lengthy extension process and the uncertainty from immigration officials, the poster is considering a border run to re-enter Thailand and obtain a new 180-day stamp. They sought advice from the community regarding the border run and shared their insights for others in similar situations.

Even if they decline your extension your visa still ok just have to do a border run

yep, MFA guy said as much. Immigration may refuse to grant extension but you'll still be good for a border run.

Appreciate the post. Wish I could help but haven't gotten to that point yet myself. Hopefully by commenting on this it will increase visibility and maybe someone else can offer some advice.

Just pay the fine for not doing your 90 day report then leave Thailand. Small price to pay for peace. The return to get a new 180 day stamp but remember to do your 90 day report next time

absolutely ridiculous requirements. The govt here should clarify this immediately. I'm on a different visa, but was thinking of changing to a DTV in the future.

Yep. They told me the same thing last week. I’m gonna try again in February when my bank statement meets their expectations.

My number one reason for switching from non-O retirement visa to DTV was specifically to AVOID immigration. Having put up with their inconsistent condescending behaviour for years, I wanted out. Got no idea why people would throw themselves at their mercy when a simple bounce pulls it up
Barry ******
Elite visa is way better for avoiding immigration.

You can do your 90 days through the official agent and they will take care of any tm30 updates for an extra fee if you need.

And you get a 1 year stamp which is good enough for most people
Anonymous ******************
@Barry *****
Cost wise, Elite doesn't measure up! DTV is 10,000 baht for five years, Elite is 650,000 baht. Can't see the value in that!
Barry ******
the value is not dealing with much bureaucracy associated with visas, which is why I suggested that.

You can always make more money but you can't make more time.

The DTV visa is most appropriate for digital nomads or people who want to do tourist related activities beyond a normal tourist visa (therefore the 6 month stamp).

For retirees, the best suitable options is the retirement visa, LTR visa if you qualify or the elite visa if you hate bureaucracy.
Anonymous ******************
@Barry *****
640,000 Baht is a lot to pay to "avoid bureaucracy" which the DTV does anyway. I switched from non-O to avoid immigration and it does the job, and I'll keep the 640k in my pocket! I see the LTR conditions are being watered down too
John *******
Wow, you must have applied, received the visa and returned to Thailand pretty quick. The embassy I went through started accepting on July 15th. If you submitted July 15th, results same day and entered Thailand the same day, 180 days would be Jan 20th.

I've said this before and I'll say it again: only a complete moron would attempt to do an extension of the DTV. It blows my mind you would take so many trips to the immigration, spend so much time on paperwork, when in that times you could gone to Cambodia or Malaysia or wherever and be back with a fresh-no-questions-asked 180 stay stamp!
Ivan ************
@Win****
makes sense to go try and see how hard it is. Helpful for everyone else as well. No-one knows until someone goes to try to extend it.

Thank you for the sharing your experience. To go for a border run depending a bit where you staying at the moment. From Bangkok for example you can get cheap flights to Vietnam. From Pattaya you could go by bus to Cambodia. From north of Thailand to Laos. South of Thailand e.g. Phuket it’s better to go to Malaysia …

I was thinking of going for DTV, but decided to hold off and see how it beds down. In some respects, it looks almost too good to be true (in particular Thai Soft Powers option), so I am worried that they start clamping down on it. Sure enough, I spoke with a couple of agents over the past few days and Immigration are now definitely tightening up on it. They are retrospectively cancelling the visa i.e. after it has been granted and the holder has been living in Thailand, after going through the paperwork and checking everything again i.e. checking the legitimacy of bookings that were claimed (Muay Thai, medical etc), checking the legitimacy of companies used in the submissions, checking that projected income claimed has been credited into the bank accounts etc. People caught out have their visas cancelled, and are given a 7 day stamp on their passport. The way I see this moving is the DTV being split into two - (i) Soft Power option will not get 5 years, and will be based on the bookings made, (ii) Workation option will be subjected to more rigorous checks on application, and regular checks on income claimed thereafter (probably annually). Just my personal feeling, but that's the way I see it going.
Luit *****************
@Sean **********
checking legitimacy of companies used in the submissions??? checking that projecten income has been credited in bank accounts???

How can they check foreign bank accounts?

Besides there is no income requirement at all.

These statements make your story hard to believe.

the agents have a huge commercial interest AGAINST the DTV visa. They will try to get you on a more lucrative visa. I however can see the DTV visa becoming a liability the ED visa became.

@Sean **********
So your a clairvoyant are you Sean? So why does the soft power option look dubious? At least the people I know that have gone down that route have the 500,000 equivalent in their UK bank accounts and it is there every month. The remote working side of it might be a bit more questionable, some that have the DTV on that basis may not be guaranteed continuous work, therefore may have to dip into the 500,000 baht they have that they used to get the visa in the first place. I take everything I read on Sadbook, sorry FB with a large pinch of salt so to speak.

- the original poster is highlighting the requirements for successful extension. This sub-poster is trying to say that immigration is retrospectively canceling visas, which were granted by a different government agency. That is highly unlikely
Lesly ****************
@John ******
John Macom i mean u just had to post that and u saw the backlash.. there is some evidence on cancels. I remember reading and even sharing a post from a French group here in French that translated to saying 5 DTV guys returning to France were asked for 6 digit Tax at Don Muang AirPort and when they refused their DTVs were canned.
John *******
@Lesly ***************
- Huh? Backlash? Not sure what you mean. Typically, the Department of Immigration can not cancel something approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as they are completely separate government agencies. Furthermore, tax IDs are handled by a completely different government agency. Love to see this post. Doubt it is real.
Lesly ****************
@John ******
All agencies give the Police Department the powers to even verify them. If you don't know how that works. Study. On top of all of that is Thai Police and Thai Immigration which runs under it. This post is totally really coz from the 10Y LTR Visa experience and this exactly happened there at start only till they realised its suppose to be handled at 5Y and not yearly.. yahahah.. so chillax and read it as new info and that its real. No one has time to post such long self experience shock and sorrow to help others and relieve one self a bit either. Thats what is called human sharing and the share arrow that always turn right on social media. Thai law works on the accused to acquit himself of the accusation even from Police.

- Again, the argument was around DTV being canceled by immigration. You are not showing any evidence that it was canceled due to taxes. "Reputable Agent" is the biggest oxymoron in Thailand. All agents pay bribes to immigration officers, which immediately removes the "reputable" tag. You've been sucked in. It IS bs. Immigration has cancelled no DTVs, this is agency bs, because it's affecting their under the counter business

Jim **********
@John ******
i don’t have a DTV but am looking at one for my GF. It just seemed to me that the guys was trying to raise awareness on this, and he has nothing to gain, but is copping flak. Seems a bit harsh to me. Anyway, the agent in Pattaya that I mentioned is pulling out of the DTV market, because he does not want anyone using falsified docs coming back on him.
John *******
@Jim *********
No, I agree with the original poster. I have been saying all along that Dept of Immigration will absolutely request these type of documents when applying for an extension. Extensions fall under their mandate and they will absolutely do this. What I was asking was related to canceling of visas, which is an entirely different concept than denying and extension. The original visa was granted by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and therefore Dept of Immigration doesn’t have the power to cancel those visas (only DTV extensions). An agent in Thailand technically can’t do much with DTVs, because they require you to engage with an embassy outside of Thailand and not Immigration Offices in Thailand. He does have a lot to gain, if he convinces people to apply for extensions based on categories (retirement, etc), that can be extended for years with Immigration.
Sean *******

Elite can't be done online first time, it's the exact same as any other visa. They will reject if you try to do it online first time on an entry.

LTR doesn't have 90 day reporting, they have 1 year checkins that are like the 90 day but only every year. These aren't renewals, they get stamped in until the end of their visa (up to 5 years) each time.

you can, but not the first time of every stay, so for DTV when you do border bounce you always have to do 90 days report in person, because it is every time again the first time of the stay.

It seems sending by registered mail also counts as in person.

the question then will be how much paperwork?

Dave ****
That's interesting info but wait a sec, you entered immigration and because you went to the wrong counter that's a straight up ฿2000 fine, that's extremely harsh. It seems to be at the moment they have absolutely no idea what they need to do for an extension and if you have to resubmit everything again then it's basically like reapplying so therefore is not a 5 year visa but a 6 month visa because if you fail to meet the requirements you don't get the extension and you only get 6 months out of it. Also you would think they would go easy on the first batch until they have it figured out to keep the momentum and the success of the visa going rather than a bunch of negative reports all over social media if that's how it's going to be.

the fine is for not doing the 90-day report, which is mandatory for 99,9% of all foreigners in Thailand (like excluding elite visas) IF they stay more than 90 days continously. It's not necessary if you travel often, as the clock resets upon each entry.
