I currently pay less than €40 per month for an insurance that covers almost the same amount as your fund. I would choose this option any time, instead of keeping hundreds of thousands or more sitting on the account. But I guess it is a question of choices.
Perhaps bit off topic but .... insurance is always a "must-have". Even if your visa does not require it. Unless your plans in Thailand are to sit at home and look out of the window for 99.99% of the time. Better pay a small amount monthly/yearly than start looking for hundreds of thousands in an emergency...
2x60 is 120. So, 120 really is as "maxed out" as you can get without buying an extension at a local immigration. Having said that, if everything is as you say it is, I really do not understand why they say you should not opt for tourist visa...
While there are some (unwritten) rules, it heavily depends on your personal entry (and visa) history and perhaps even more heavily on the specific officer, who is checking your passport on the day you enter the country.
Funny that none of these people, who so confidently claim there have been such cases, want to make that claim under their own name. Always anonymously. Wonder what the reason may be...
I have done the Sungai Kolok border twice. Both times they have invited me in to talk to who I suppose was the chief, or at least some type of superior IO. However, the conversations were nice and friendly and I was on my way in just a few minutes. My own take on it was that this particular land border sees mostly Malaysians come and go, and they might not be too familiar with DTV yet (or just want to check a "non-Asian" bit more thoroughly)... As to the "smooth process", it depends more on you than a specific country or checkpoint. Be polite, dress politely, (bonus) try to learn some basic Thai (especially if you have been here longer than 6 or 12 months), and you should not have any problems.
