 you are exactly right your 90 days goes to zero when you leave Thailand and return. And you just do your 90 days reporting on line if you remain in Thailand and don’t leave/return . Not sure what they are going on about here.

You leave as planned when you return your visa in back to day 1 as you have done immigration at the airport.
