What are the best visa options for a 19-year-old Canadian expat wanting to live in Thailand?

Hey, I'm 19, Canadian and would want to live in Thailand. What are my options? LTR doesn't apply since I don't have the salary/age/degree. No retirement because of my age and the elite visa at 30,000$ CAD is a bit out of budget at the moment. Considering Ed or Muay Thai Visa at the moment. I have a steady 2k usd/m remote salary and a lot in savings. (Just not 30k lol). I'd like to go to Koh Samui for its rural setting, nature, beaches and all.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A 19-year-old Canadian is seeking guidance on living in Thailand. They note that traditional long-term residence options like the LTR visa are not applicable due to restrictions on salary, age, and qualifications. Given their remote job with a steady income of $2,000 USD per month, and interest in Koh Samui's environment, they are considering an education (Ed) visa for language studies or a Muay Thai visa as feasible alternatives.

Tourist visa good for 9 months, with border runs every 3 months. Plus ed Visa as others mentioned. Do that for a few years and if you eventually get married here, could get a marriage Visa with 400k baht

I did many tourist Visas (though have not done since precovid) and never had to show anything other than the initial itinerary going into Thailand sent with the visa application form. I've heard of people getting hassled for proof of onward travel but never experienced that.

yes multi entry , good for 6 months, with last entry right before it expires giving you 3 more months.

what's the difference between the multi entry and single entry one? From what I can see in the requests, you need to provide valid proofs you will be going in and out of the country to receive the multi-entry one.

Contact the Thai schools that have international program. They are likely high-end ,in terms of tuition fee for Thai students, who want to have English as a Second language. Search for the schools and contact them directly. Be flexible about the salary and prove them that your teaching style will help the students to be fluent in English. Also,Open to the schools outside Bangkok ,like the small provinces, not big cities or the places that crowded with expats.

Also making Thai friends through internet/social media and you may ask for more information. You might not end up with Ed visa, but business visa, for instance.

Start Learning Thai culture and language now to prove your future employer(s)/ business partner(s) that you are serious. Also start making TokTok clips and make it viral (in good term) that can charm the viewers as soon as possible. Remember !every employer want the best employees not just a plain ‘Farang’

Good luck!!

Education visa to learn Thai language. It gets a year or two to stay. Then you will know more about your desired next steps. You might be married by then and will stay on a 'spouse ' visa for ever.

At your age I would go to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. While it isn't legal to work on a tourist visa, no one cares about those working remotely. They do offer 3 month tourist visas that were easy to renew. Some agents can get you temporary resident card that will allow you to stay 1-3 yrs. Accommodations are cheaper than BKK, great food at similar costs and tons of down to earth beautiful women.

no long term visa. Some agents can get you TRC (temporary residence under bogus investment etc.) The 3 month visa is back, before there were no issues with visa runs but recent heard that couple people were told they need to stay away few days in between, not sure how true that is. VN is a pretty cool place, but the noise pollution and other little BS will get to you sooner or later. I lived ther for 10 years and just recently moved to TH and am pretty sure that I will be going back and forth quite a lot as there is a lot to like about it.

If you want only a year or so just use tourist visas & visa exempt stamps. Get a METV from your home country first of all, & you can squeeze almost 9 months out of that. Spend time exploring the countries next to & near Thailand between visas etc... so you look like a tourist to Thai immigration - plus you'll have a much better experience. After a year or so you'd know if you want more time here or not & could review other visa options then!

At your age I'd be focused on Europe & European type countries, as the opportunities there for a young guy are great - whereas Thailand is best for older guys who want to live like they are young but can't in the West! Choose wisely! ;) But a short holiday in Sth East Asia is a good idea at any age!

Being young you would likely to want to travel. I suggest come to Thailand on a tourist visa ( apply inside Canada) to get 60 days and extend that for another month. That gives you 3 months here and then travel outside Thailand and come back in with another 30 days. Then decide whether you actually want to be here long term

The two options I would suggest you look into are teaching and scuba diving.

Teaching will likely require you to have a degree. You could do private tutoring or work at a private language school but that would be risky and would require some cash up-front.

Scuba dive master requires considerable training which comes at a cost.

I think you're missing the point of getting a college degree. 90% of the stuff you learn in college you will not use. But what you do use is that you have the capacity and ability to learn. It also allows you to grow up and give you time to ponder about your future. The bonus is that it gives you a certificate at the end that is a way in for interviews. But college is not for everyone. If you think a 19 year old is mature enough to learn online and build a career out of it then you might be right. But I look at all these people in their early 20s in western countries as a bunch of soft ass dumb fucks.

as time goes by, less companies care about degrees and certificats. Further, I don't see why anyone nowadays would want to be an employee. There are tones of opportunities to do something on your own and not be a part of the slave system, but ya the new generation for most is useless and so times will be very interesting as more and more people are replaced with AI and automation.

Don't bother getting a formal education if you don't need it. If you're already working as a product manager at 19 remotely then you're better off than most people in this group.

I've been working in tech for about 14 years remotely in Latin America and Asia. Don't worry about longterm visas right away until you're 100% sure. You can easily find a couple spots you like in SE Asia and rotate between them easily.

Hit me up if you have any questions
