Still in post pandemic recovery. I was there in May/June of 2022 and there were no planes flying in or out of Chiang Rai.

Good question!! I think they like tourists to support the local hotels and businesses around the airport. I find restibg after a 9 hour flight in Bangkok very relaxing prior to heading to my home province the next day. Out bound Internationals its easier to fly the day before the long haul flight as often they leave early morning
