If they ask you this question, it's because they already want to deny you entry.

But with the crackdown currently going on, it's likely going to get asked to more people than previously.

Who has and has not been asked literally makes no difference for you. If you are asked, you must have it or you will be denied entry. It's as simple as that. Even if 1 million people before you were not asked, you must legally have proof of funds to enter Thailand as a tourist.

@Ryan *******
yet that does not meet immigration requirements

That's a question for your immigration office. Some will require it to be in a single transfer, and some will allow multiple transfers to meet the requirement. You need to ask your immigration office.

They were already living in Thailand and decided to get a DTV while already in the region.

SunnyPhoenix2325 You apply when the money has been in your bank account long enough. You apply at an immigration office. It's called an extension, not a new visa from an embassy outside of Thailand.

@Dany *******
They would need to go stay somewhere else long enough to get a residence certificate.

I've run every red light I've come to for 30 years. I've never been stopped by police so it's legal

There is no new entry rule. There have always been 3 requirements to enter Thailand as a tourist:

1) Proof of funds - 20,000 baht or equivalent in another major currency, IN CASH ONLY

2) Proof of onward travel - a ticket out of Thailand within the number of days you will be stamped into Thailand for

3) Proof of lodging - a hotel or other booking for your first few days

It's rare to be asked for any of these, but if you are asked and cannot show it, they can deny you entry.

You'll receive an "under consideration" stamp. How long that lasts will vary by immigration office. It can be anywhere from 3 weeks up to 2 months.

An extension is not any entry. You're already in Thailand. You don't need to enter Thailand.

If you want to leave during your extension, then you need to purchase a re-entry permit to keep your extension alive when you go.

The bank will want to see your non-O entry stamp in your passport.
