you have to have 20,000 THB or equivalent in another currency on you, in CASH. It is a requirement. If you never have been asked, it doesn't matter, it still is a requirement

, if you are from the US, you don't have to worry about any ATM fees, I actually have accounts with two different financial institutions that DON'T charge me fees, give me an almost identical rate as the money changers, and REIMBURSE me those 220 baht Thai bank fees at the end of EVERY month. Charles Schwab for one, and Chase, as I have enough money in my retirement account that they also don't charge me any fees and remiburse all fees from all international bank charges.

, that's not totally true about bank fees and bad rates. I have a Charles Schwab account and they give you a great exchange rate along with no fees. Any fees charged by any bank in any country I'm in are reimbursed every month at the end of the month, and Charles Schwab doesn't collect fees when I use their debit card. All I have to do is make sure the machine has a VISA symbol on it, which is almost every machine in the world. Even a machine I used in Vietnam that didn't have a VISA symbol on it was in their system and I was reimbursed my fees at the end of the month. SO, long story short, your statement is not always true. Why would I want to run around with 20k in Thai baht when I can get that as soon as I'm settled into my room, then get my money, or at least take out maybe 5k in baht at the airport from the ATM. The airport ATM's AREN'T like the exchange counters at the airports, I get the same exchange rate from any ATM wherever it's at because Schwab is giving me a very competitive rate!

my meastro 1.2% extra + 250 baht costs equals the rate for exchange on the street when taking out/exchanging 30k

, the difference I get with my Charles Schwab debit card at the ATM's is almost the same, so it's such a minimal difference it's not worth running around from country to country carrying cash! And I don't have any ATM fees, as at the end of each month Charles Schwab reimburses me all fees from the local banks, and they don't charge fees for using their card, anywhere in the world, as long as the machine says VISA on it, which is almost every ATM machine pretty much everywhere.

Bad rate of exchange and high fees, but if you don't mind, it is okay.

but you carry some cash and that’s my original point . Why do people walk around with NONE ? It can and does cause problems . Why do I use cash you ask ? It’s quicker for one and I don’t have to remember to keep receipts and tick everything off the bill once a month to check it’s right . I stopped doing that in the 1990’s hated it .

But the main point is everybody should carry some cash , say 1000 baht or equivalent for emergencies . Personally I carry more but that’s just my choice . I also use scan and cards as well of course

I rarely use cash, Thailand, US, and the Philippines. Not only do I not have to deal with getting cash sent to me all the time, or use ATM's all the time, I get the best exchange rate. My question to you is, why do you still use cash? Oh, I also get a LOT of points for every purchase (which equals free money). I am also over 60, I've been using credit cards, almost exclusively, for at least 15 years. "Living on credit" what exactly does that mean? Do I carry some cash on me, of course I do.

The majority of the wise ones use cash here.

Always carry cash. Some people don’t and when the time comes , they’ll wish they had. Thailand is just one destination . There a whole wide world out there. Open up your eyes . Better still , open up

your mind and close your mouth. You might learn something but it’s unlikely you could do either.

@Henry Chinaski, Because that's a requirement if you want to enter Thailand on Visa Exempt and not all airports have ATMs before immigration.

Sure if you have TrueMoney or Prompt pay it's easy to pay just with your phone but as a tourist you won't have that.

Pretty much everywhere accepts online transactions in Thailand. Buses, taxis and even food carts. I guess you haven't been in Thailand lately

So how do you pay for a Taxi, the bus or the food cart at the night market as example? There are loads of resorts and guest houses that only accept cash, - even if you're below 60 years of age 🥰

I am and nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing these people who live on credit having their card declined for 100 baht and because they don’t have 1 baht on them have to walk out looking stupid . Makes my day, the sheer stupidity of it

Chances are it won't happen but if you are the one they decide to check then you have a problem.
