My experience is with volunteer visas. It didn't matter when, but I needed to "cancel" visa immigration even though I had already left the country.

Get them to take it in Tuesday. Why wouldn't they do that. They can keep the receipt and if you come back, you can get it from them.

They have a pretty good system in Vientiane these days. Actually using a queue system that makes everything more efficient. I wish other offices had easier systems.

Flying you can do "unlimited" but do it often and they ask more questions.

What do you need to go to a one year non immigrant (retirement) visa? Can you do it from visa exempt plus extension?

Volunteers can get 2 years.

I really only know about volunteers and it's convoluted with social department into the mix also, but if you have a work permit, a letter from social, you get a one year visa. I can't see why flying to get a new visa is simpler/cheaper than immigration. The lawyer has to prepare documents either way and new visas have got to impact work permit applications.
