TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around various experiences expats have while visiting the Chiang Mai Immigration office, highlighting wait times and service efficiency. Some members share positive encounters, mentioning quick processing times (as little as 5 minutes in some locations), while others express frustration over inefficiencies and the chaotic scene at the immigration office. Comments also compare experiences from different areas in Thailand, pointing out that while some immigration offices are efficient, others tend to be overcrowded and disorganized. There is also a mention of the Thai Elite Visa for its convenience and no waiting lines.

On the brighter side... In and out of Mae Nam immigration in under 20 minutes on Samui. One of the IOs actually came outside to fetch me while I was having a cigarette. "Sir? Finish!"

But why should anyone have to splash the cash for supporting what's basically become an inefficient industry in Thailand?
No country in the world has this sort of problem that I've visited or worked in..
I've tourist visited the US, and L.A. was a 45 minutes painful process.
Worked there too, but the legalities were obscured probably by the Ford organisation.

Few countries have visa exempt stamp process so anything above that needs to be vetted properly and 20 million came last year to a country of 46 million that is a lot of people to process man6 more than the USA do and try getting a visa through the USA .. you have to mail it in prior to an interview process, obviously you donβt know what a foreigner goes through in the USA to stay

I was in and out of Kanchanaburi Immigration for a visa extension in less than 30 minutes this morning. Even sorted out a minor problem with my hotel not registering me on the system correctly. Very helpful staff. While I was waiting another ferrang came in and immediately started complaining to me about how slow they were and how terrible the staff were, as if they couldn't overhear him. I think he will probably be there all day.

I arrived there at 5:53am today and there were already like 8 or 10 immigration officers waiting. Received my number at around 6:15. Thankfully, I was the first for the business visa. Got called in before 7:00am and left after 3 hours. As usual, my visa wasn't extended yet. Will have to be back next week. So far, my best experience here at CM immigration in 15 yrs! π

No idea what they're waiting for. A visa extension though is fairly painless. Took me about 90 minutes and that was over lunchtime (which they don't seem to stop for)

I can top this with 10 minutes for retirement extension in Sisaket ππ€£ at any given day. And no line-sitters needed π

Sisaket Immigration serves the whole province . . . . . . . around & near Kantharalak alone there are over 100 foreigners . . . and in Khun Han there must be over 20 farang . . . yet we rarely meet at the immigration office. Only two times in 10 years there was one foreigner being served before it was my turn π
3 foreigners live in Sisaket. I visited once for a re-entry, so easy.

Nong Khai maybe 30 minutes for Visa Extension based on retirement and multi- reentry stamp. 5 mins for 90 day report.

I'm so glad I live in Ratchaburi. 90 days takes 5 minutes and visas 45 min.

I need to head down in a bit. Any spots left in the car park?

What are these people queuing for specifically?
Charles ***********
Yes, that's what I was wondering. It's certainly NOT for visa (or visa exempt) extensions as that doesn't take long.

Why are people there at 5.30. It was never an issue before at the old place

Almost 9am now I am here, not a single African in sight (except me) yet they complain about discrimination. Second biggest immigration in Thailand but not a single black person to be seen. nigerians would require a limo pickup & red carpet I suppose lol
maybe big joke has kicked most of them out already lol
Shezan ******
Am sorry but yes all sorts of nationalities just like Airport but no unless if I am going blind not a single African I saw its the second biggest continent as well. Anyways I don't care I don't want to be labelled as a racist. Just distancing myself from scammers & trouble makers being African myself, people read Indian on my face sorry I am not

are u trying to say africans dont come to immigration? not true i see some there whenever i go...
what is considered Chiang Mai? Chiang Mai has around 500,000 within 5 minutes of the old city and probably over 1 million within 30 minutes of the old city.

David Allen exactly! Not quite 5 minutes, they stay until 7 or 8 pm most nights. Big BOSS was here last week and it is 1000 times better. The office here enforces immigration laws. All of them! Proof of income, TM 30, 90 day reporting. Some offices look at you like what's a TM30?
I don't think Bangkok (or actually anyone in Thailand) understands the enormity of the task. At last guess the consulates here estimated 20,000 expats in Chiang Mai province. The 2017 census put Chiang Mai's population at 131,000. 15% of the population is expats.
Although it is a "good job" by Thai standards I have a feeling the burn out rate is going to be sky high. I so feel for these people!
Chiang Mai immigration currently processes over 1000 people a day with like 10 officers?
Mary ********
This is a HUGE improvement! Last month you had to cue starting at midnight. If you got there after 5 am you wouldn't get seen that day. Here were fist fights in the lot over places in line. People hired line sitters.
Gareth **********
Bloody hell! I certainly don't live there and thankfully so. Those numbers and times are insane.
Tod *********
You obviously don't live in Chiang Mai (OR Bangkok) do you? Those immigration offices are JAMMED with people. I was at the immigration office in Bangkok at 4:50AM yesterday morning and there were easily 50-60 people in line already and by the time they opened there were over 600 :O...
