Are there risks of ED visa applications being denied if applied outside Laos?

ED visa applications possibly denied?

I've been in touch with 3-4 schools offering ED visas in Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen. All of them lay out the directions and process for getting the ED visa specifically through Laos. When I asked if other countries' embassies are OK, they say basically "yes, but we recommend Laos for its convenience." I don't know if they are referring to the overland convenience of travel there over, say, Cambodia or Malaysia or that other consulates are iffy. I have a trip to Cambodia coming up and my plan was to get the ED visa there. I'm wondering if the schools recommend Laos b/c it's just geographically easier or if other consulates sometimes deny EDs.

TLDR : Answer Summary
This post discusses concerns about the ED visa application process in Thailand, specifically the preference for applying at the consulate in Vientiane, Laos. Several schools have recommended Laos for its ease of obtaining the visa compared to other countries like Cambodia. Comments suggest that the Thai consulate in Phnom Penh can be particularly difficult, potentially leading to higher chances of denial for ED visas. The conversation highlights the significance of each consulate's reputation and the specific paperwork involved in applying for an ED visa.

"persnickety" hehehe

Because of the embassy

The reason they want you to use Vientiane is that it isn't that tough of a place to get an ED visa.

The thai consulate in Phnom Penh is NOT a user friendly consulate and they can be down right persnickety about visa applications.

Read what your contract states with the school. Many, MANY schools have it written into their contract that IF you use a consulate they don't recommend and don't get the ED visa, that's on you NOT the school.

When they generate the paperwork, it is filled out specific to the embassy applying. At least that is what my school did a few years ago.

Maybe that's why schools up here have an easier time with the ED? Good working relationship with the consulate close by? (I'm sure the MOE paperwork was generic, but the school's cover letters and visa applications were all typed up and prepared in advance.)

, Wow :O that's strange :/

I've seen paperwork from 10 or more schools down here in Bangkok for ED visa students and they're always just "ATTN; Thai Consulate".

Perhaps in most cases. In my case, it was exactly as I said above: typed out addressing the Consulate in Vientianne. I argued with them about it because I'd been planning to go to Penang.

no it's not actually filled out for a specific thai consulate :/ The paperwork from the MOE and the paperwork that the school gives is addressed to "thai consulate" without any location.

What does the school say. Have you asked why this is their commendation. I think you should as there may be a good reason from their standpoint.

I think because Vientiane is the easiest ambassy to get your visa, not because of geography ( in all case : Its true for tourist visa! , might be true for ED visa too !

Good luck

They have a pretty good system in Vientiane these days. Actually using a queue system that makes everything more efficient. I wish other offices had easier systems.
