TLDR : Answer Summary
The procedure for obtaining a Certificate of Residence in Chiang Mai requires you to submit documents at the Chiang Mai Immigration Office located on the 2nd Floor of Promenada between 9am and 11am, and you can pick it up two weeks later after 2pm. The service is free, but a TM30 form is also needed for applying. An expedited service downstairs is available for 1000 baht for next day processing, but previous options of 500 baht for quicker results have reportedly returned, although with cost increases.
The "process" changed. I only found out because I was going to find my immigration friend and have a chat. I had to go upstairs and saw another friend picking one up. Too simple now.
Yes and no, TM30 is a very quick process in my experience. I don't ever use tuk tuks, don't feel safe in them. Taxi's I use if I'm going out for beers, other than that I'll drive myself. I know that obviously doesn't apply to the majority so I do see your point. Just seems pretty crazy having to go from one side of the city to the other if you fly in. A lot of people would be on tourist visas so not needing the service. I guess the mere fact it's logical and simple means it'll never happen
Good idea but thatโll reduce the workload and maybe the number of people employed! Plus, the taxi/tuk tuk drivers lose their share to get to Prom and Prom loses the coffee customers then Promenada closes and all the workers there lose their jobs and canโt buy food from the markets...and all because stamping at the airport is a good idea! ๐
Hopefully, it will stay like this. Maybe they were just doing it to pay for the new building like the TM.30 tax in Chiang Mai. By the way the new building at airport looks fantastic. I hope they can create more efficient procedures for Chiang Mai people.
I went in yesterday and the system is changed due to their new Chiang Mai boss. No graft needed. 50+ per day and no money changing hands. My friend did it twice. Guy downstairs is gone.
