How long in advance can a work permit be extended? I was told 2 months but now my lawyer says one month. It expires on August 16th but I have to leave the country for a new non-B multiple in 10 days which I cannot get if my work permit expires in less than 8 months.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the confusion around how far in advance a work permit can be extended in Thailand, with differing opinions suggesting either one or two months. It highlights that a work permit must be renewed before its expiration date and that extensions can vary depending on individual circumstances. Additionally, users mention the importance of ensuring that the work permit remains valid for at least eight months when applying for a new NON-B visa from abroad.

For a regular position, a work permit will be issued for 1 year, but for executive position or experts, a work permit will be issued for 2 years. A work permit must be renewed before its expiry date or it will lapse.

Everybody can get a 2year WP from the second year onwards. Always been like that. The paper pushers dont wat you to know this as it halves their profits.
Valère *************************
Why do you need a lawyer or a paper pusher for something so easy as a WP? Just do it yourself.

I don't speak enough Thai to fully understand which documents are needed and where to obtain them. The slightest mistake will get you refused so it's much easier for me to let someone deal with it who does it everyday.

@Ju***
, Do the people pushing paper for your work permit application know it's possible to get a 2 year work permit instead of just one year?
Valère *************************
Everybody can get 2 year WP from the socond year onwards. Its been like that for ages.
Shayne **********
Volunteers can get 2 years.

@Ll***
, I know the two year extension of stay was only BIO but I thought that regular people could get a 2 year work permit.

I'll hafta check and will report back ;) .
Lloyd ********
I thought, (probably wrongly), that was only for BOI companies ?

I never heard about this before. Will check! Thanks for the info! :)

Are you changing jobs? Why are you leaving the country? Why can't you get an extension of stay at immigration? Some things are so confusing.
Tod *********
@Sha***
, there are a TON of foreigner (especially it seems down south or on the islands) which for one reason or another go to Penang and pull year-long, multi-entry Non-B visas rather than do extensions of stays.
Shayne **********
Okay
Julia ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
Not changing jobs but I don't have 4 Thai staff so cannot get extension of stay.

Shayne Rochfort - Criteria for Volunteers or teachers are a complete different matter again. Not same paper work either.
Shayne **********
I really only know about volunteers and it's convoluted with social department into the mix also, but if you have a work permit, a letter from social, you get a one year visa. I can't see why flying to get a new visa is simpler/cheaper than immigration. The lawyer has to prepare documents either way and new visas have got to impact work permit applications.
Joe ******
Different criteria and paperwork to apply for extension then to get a new Visa abroad.
Lloyd ********
Why are you not just extending you permission to stay in country ?
Joe ******
We like to travel ;-)

Same reason as Julia, plenty of me but not enough of them :-)

Because I only have 1 Thai staff, rest is Burmese so not possible.

you just go to Penang and apply for a new 1 year NON-B. Your WP is still valid until the 16th August.

My WP and my Visa expiry dates are months apart, sometimes more, sometimes less but never had a problem. Then when your back, you get your WP renewed

Used to be...send the passport only to the border...then it became make a fake visa stamp from a potato! 🤣🤣
Joe ******
Used to be "Money for nothing and chicks for free"

Now it's still Money for nothing but the chicks have become Ladyboys"
Tony ********
Yup... been doing non B for 12-13 years...but never been easy... just easier 😃...cant comment on non O...investment visa had lower requirement b4...after financial crisis...which makes sense...i guess the Thais all go," I remember when it was 25 baht to the GBP" etc b4 the crash lol
Joe ******
It used to be just sooooo easy to get a Multiple NON-O in Penang
Joe ******
Back in time, you didn't need WP to get NON-B if you had a company. Then they changed. 5 years no need for WP if you invest, then it was 3 years and now, I don't know.
Tony ********
How u got non B without WP? 😮
Joe ******
First 90 day visa is years and years back in time.

2 different passports since. I had NON-B for a few years

before I started to do something and got a WP.

Well - I hate work anyway so why am I bothered ?

That's the big 800'000 THB question :-)
Tony ********
8-9 months on WP required...i.e. the balance of the time from first 90 day visa...
Tony ********
Not sure about the bit by bit but it needs to be synched
Joe ******
So you mean I should cut back bit by bit on my Visa till it's in tune with my WP?
Tony ********
Stricter rules as of last year...now better to not do one more 90 days from 'enter before' date...
Joe ******
Where is
@Tod ********
when you need him ;-)

I'm sure he could shed some light on this one.
Joe ******
Hmmmm, i'll be on my border run on the 10th July, so now not sure if I should go to Penang instead and renew my Visa 4 months premature - ohh no, that's not possible either ;-)

So,, I'll take my chances in November ;-)

Mh, maybe it has something to do with consulates being stricter now. I trust Jim and I know he tried everything he could. I'll see what happens when I get there next time but pretty sure I'll only get a single entry.
Joe ******
What's happen last year, I went to Penang to renew my NON-B in August but forgot my WP book.

Jim suggested I have it sent to me, fly back and get it or apply for a single NON-B but at a silly expensive price. So Thursday night I look in my Passport and see, my NON-B only expires on Friday. So came back on the same visa and got 3 months, then went back to Penang in November to get my new visa. That's why I'm now 6 months out of sync with my work permit and visa.

Now I do have my own company too but work for someone else, so not sure if that could make a difference.
Joe ******
Could it be, not used more than 8 months of your WP? e.g 4 months left?
Joe ******
Julia - only 5 - 6 months left Nov - May
Julia ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
You had 8 months validity of work permit when you applied so that's why you got it
Julia ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
Jim called his connections at the consulate for me and said it's absolutely not possible and I should get an extension in June before I come next time. So I'll not get it...
Joe ******
WP renewed on the - 26 May 2015

1 year Non-B in Penang - 27 August 2015

WP renewed on the - 26 May 2016

1 year NON-B in Penang - 04 Nov 2016,

My WP renewed again - 26 May 2017

Although, not sure if I still would get it if I wait now until February to renew my Visa

ORIGINAL POSTER
Last time they refused the 1 year visa as my work permit was valid less than 8 months (applied end of march).
Joe ******
My work permit is always been from
*****
onward for 1 year,

Whilst my yearly Visas where in May, the next year in August, then November, ....

Basically, I have 15 times Work Permit but only 12 times visa.
Tony ********
Stick to one year with the visa, dont use the 'extra' 90 days at the end
Tony ********
Ahh...only a month early possible
Julia ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
I had some visa issues and only have a 3 month single entry now. So Jim said extend work permit 2 months before expiry and come back to get a 1-year ME.
Tony ********
Cannot apply more than 1 month before it expires
Tony ********
@Julia ***********
yup, its a pain I know, we had to make <1 year WP extensions for a few clients...just to bring it back into sync
Julia ************
ORIGINAL POSTER
Shit. Jim told me it's possible. Then I'll have to get a 3month single entry again I guess...
