Is a visa required for a 4-week holiday in Thailand?

Your best bet is to check with the Thai embassy in your home country. What others say about your passport is relevant. Not every country's passport allows for the same privileges in Thailand. In general though, many countries are allowed 60 days visa exemption on arrival.

Does your country have a Thai embassy? If so, a longer-term tourist visa might be offered. I paid $200 US for a 6 month multiple entry tourist visa. Of course, different countries, different availability.

that's not what the Chiang Mai immigration office told me. They would accept proof of 1 year of deposits from my US bank or direct deposits from my pension.

I have a friend moving to Thailand in late December from California. I turned him onto a place in South Dakota that just today assisted him in moving there. They provide good mail forwarding services and assistance with getting a SD driver's license.
